Should I go to A&E…?

I know the general consensus is no, not unless your leg is falling off but I am in agony with my stomach. I had what I thought was gastritis start in January, but kept having flare ups of agonising pain that would then subside. I’ve been in pain for 48 hours, in my stomach radiating to the right side and upper back. It’s not easing off. I’ve eaten a small amount of rice today, nothing else. This increased the pain. Antacids have stopped working. I’ve been throwing up what I think is acid.

I have tried several times in the past three months to phone my gp but i have been in a long queue & unable to wait on hold as i have to look after the baby. Should I go to a&e? The thought of sitting there in this pain is horrifying but i’m terrified ive got something seriously wrong.

personally, I would

HolibobsinApril · 27/03/2023 20:34

Can you call 111? They might be able to get you a doctors appointment.

I'm not saying don't go to A&E but it would be worth a call. They are useless at the moment though.

Annietheacrobat · 27/03/2023 20:34

Could be gallstones. Sounds reasonable to go

Phone 111 and take advice, if you're in pain you need help, Good luck,

mynameiscalypso · 27/03/2023 20:37

Pregnancy can kick off all sorts of underlying conditions - gallstones, coeliac disease, IBD. I'd probably try 111 first though as the idea of sitting in A&E while in pain is not appealing at all.

purpledalmation · 27/03/2023 20:38

A&E nurse. Yes, if you can go. It could be pancreatitis, which is very serious, or gallstones which are so painful. Some blood tests may rule out the serious stuff and you should get pain relief and advice on having a USS.

Fluffygreenslippers · 27/03/2023 20:41

I’m currently on hold to 111

Absolutely. Gallstones/cholecystitis can cause pancreatitis - all are agony and need medical attention

Newuser82 · 27/03/2023 20:43

I'd ring 111. Only because it might save you a huge wait in a and e. I would want to be seen in your position! Hope you feel better soon.

TheHouseNextDoor · 27/03/2023 20:53

Fuck yes. If you are in a lot of pain, you should go !

Or see if you can get your GP out to you.

Fluffygreenslippers · 27/03/2023 20:54

111 will have a dr call me back. I’m in so much pain. Don’t know what I’m going to do tomorrow if it doesn't ease off a bit.

Dr might be able to come out and give you decent pain relief...sounds horrible, I hope you get some respite soon.

quewbg · 27/03/2023 21:08

Sounds very like gallstones. Try some buscopan to help with the pain if you can't be seen soon OP

quewbg · 27/03/2023 21:08

You can buy buscopan in the supermarket op

Lizzt2007 · 27/03/2023 21:11

That sounds like it could be appendicitis, I'd be very surprised if 111 don't send you straight to a&e. I had similar symptoms and that's what mine turned out to be. Good luck op, hope they get you sorted x

Fluffygreenslippers · 27/03/2023 22:18

Well 111 never called me back so i’ve come to a&e. It’s packed here. I’m sitting on the floor. Although tbh sitting hurts more. Still in horrendous pain.

Don't bother with 111. I don't know why people advise it. Last 2x ive used them for dcs, rang a Saturday eve had call back MONDAY for 1st time.
2nd time i had a call to see if symptoms changed and a doctor would call. Never did.
. Go to A&E

I hope you can get pain relief very soon, and they can diagnose what's wrong

Wheresthebeach · 27/03/2023 23:01

I'm sorry it's so bad. I'd go to triage and check you've not been forgotten. You should be given painkillers.
