Car insurance - parents car

DS is due to sit his practical test next week. He is currently insured as a learner driver on my car with Adrian Flux; I'm with Direct Line.

He can't afford his own car yet so we're exploring insurance options once he passes.
To add him on with Direct Line will cost £1500, with Marmalade, £950.

I'm confused though as DS has been told that once he passes he can only be insured with Direct Line (or whoever I'm with).

The car is a 7 year old Fiat Panda

I have no idea how they calculate the extra for a young named driver, ds1 was on my Churchill insurance in 2020 at a cost of an extra £1000 per year, he's since got his own car and insurance. Ds2 added 2022 but this time only a £100 per year. Only difference is I've changed from a fiesta to a mini which I would have thought would cost more 🤔

Forgot to add, with Churchill if they stay on my insurance for 1 year they do earn no claims bonus if they then take out their own policy with Churchill. Didnt work for us as ds1 got his own car before 1 year was up

Is that pay as you go with marmalade? I bought 500 miles for DS and was pretty reasonable
About 250 quid from memory

What I'm unsure about is if DS can go with another insurance company or if it has to be mine as it's my car. He thinks he is restricted to Direct Line

Is Marmalade a black box policy ? My dd has a black box policy and she's the only driver allowed on that car. When she was a learner her dad and her used different companies on that car.

I assume that he has to have the same company as you because in case of a problem, the claim might be made on the parent's policy so the child's price doesn't go up so much next year.

Are you trying to keep your existing insurance on the car and then take out a second policy on the same car but for your son?

@Shinyandnew1
Yes that's what I was hoping; for DS to have own policy on my car as Marmalade is £500 cheaper than Direct Line (who I'm with).

Not keen on having black box fitted though and having my driving tracked!

All options seem to be insanely expensive

My own policy is with direct line too. With marmalade ds is building up his own no claims. The black box is actually tiny and white. Don't really notice it to be fair. And to be honest it's made me aware of my own driving and what might need improving!

That's good to know. Thanks for clarifying
