I get the worst pain in my left ear (never the right ) on decent
I don't attempt to pop my ear incase the pain gets worse -so I just sit there and wait till they pop
The pain is excruciating

So this time I've bought ear planes ,Sudafed spray and painkillers
My plan is pop my ear before take off then a hour before landing put the ear planes in whilst taking 2 painkillers and Sudafed

Will this help? God I hope so
The pain is so bad
As soon as I land it stops immediately

I always use 3m foam earplugs. Put them in at takeoff. Take out when plane settles for flight and pop them back in around descent time. Doesn't always stop the blocked feeling but helps the pain enormously. Hope that helps

Can i ask how the earplugs work? I sometimes get really bad pain in one ear but it doesn't go on landing, can take hours.

Take something to chew (a sweet of something)

You can also get earplugs that are specially for this - they're hollow (or something) and allow air to escape (probably have that wrong) but they're great. You'll probably be able to get some airside.

Use soft foam earplugs. Make sure they completely fill the ear cavity and put them in as soon as you feel the plane begin to descend. Don't wait until seat belts signs come on, they need to be in early.
I've left them in the whole flight if it's a short one.
It works for me. I forgot them once and the pain was real.

Inhaling Olbas oil in hot water is supposed to help too but haven't tried this.

The pain is horrible isn't it
It feels like my ear is going to explode
I actually enjoy flying -just not the ear pain

Bring some dry and crunchy food such as crackers or pretzels, and slowly eat them as the plane takes of, until you've reached cruising altitude. The swallowing will help your ears from getting blocked.

Chewing gum

ToastMarmalade · 28/03/2023 01:39

Ear planes. Not plugs. Put them in before take off and after landing. A bottle of water to sip. Keep your sinuses clear so if you have sinus trouble, use a spray - ask in a pharmacy.

Chew gum. I can’t self regulate the pressure in my ears so I have the same issue with take off and landing. I chew gum, the jaw movement helps pop my ears

momager1 · 28/03/2023 02:09

this is going to sound stupid. BUT it works for me. start chewing gum about 30 min out from descent.. as soon as the seatbelt sign goes on and you are on final descent... hold your nose and blow..over and over. my husband made me do it and i thought he was nuts but it worked. before i was in pain constantly on arrival...6 flights a year.

TheSandgroper · 28/03/2023 02:50

Giving up gluten fixed all my sinus problems.

I talked DM into letting me candle her ears and she had a pain free, multiplane, journey. Often seen as mumbo jumbo but it helped her.

SinnerBoy · 28/03/2023 02:58

I was going to say pop your ears, but not now! As others have said, try chewing gum.

dudsville · 28/03/2023 04:31

I just take a decongestant. I don't always need it, but the pain is excruciating and experiencing it once was more than enough.

AceofPentacles · 28/03/2023 05:28

A bit late for you now but the only thing that works for me is using a nasal steroid spray from gp a week before flying (and while there before flying back). Good luck it's horrible !
