Where does your child play at which ages (thinking 4-10 years old)

We're wondering over here - is it better to allocate some specific play space in our main living room, or deck out an amazing bedroom.

In particular:

  • At what age did your kid prefer to be in their own room (boy or girl? Siblings?)
  • Did you do anything to push them?
  • Were they bringing toys into living room, or did you let them use livingroom storage?

Of course a lot depends on if you have this type of space at all but you get the point, if you have the luxury of some space - what is reasonable here?

I think they will play where you are for this entire age range. Mine are 5 and 8, 8yo will now sometimes play in her room and they both okay on their rooms when friends are over. But mainly still play where we are.

We have a living room, playroom and their bedrooms.

The play room is a glorified cupboard, but all the toys can be stored out of sight.

They tend to bring toys into the living room to play with.

Eldest (6) has started to play in his room more, especially for things he doesn't want to tidy up at the end of the day like train sets.

Ours prefer to be downstairs at 6 and 3. I can't see that changing anytime soon. They only have books in their rooms, no toys.

I also think of the living room as for all of us so I don't think of myself as giving up space for them. I prefer for us all to be together.
