Things you're into that your DP will never 'get' and vice versa

Echobelly · 25/03/2023 23:29

So what interests do you have that your DP will understand, and the other way round?

My DH will never get opera, or really a lot of classical music, but bless him, he'll come if me or the oldest are performing in something, he does try that much. Luckily 14YO loves both, so I can do that with them.

I'll never get either horror films or rollercoasters like DH, but he does the former with his best mate and the latter, luckily, 14YO is into. I'm glad they have this thing to share. I suspect DS might get into horror and watch it with him later, but at the moment he's terrified of even the slightest bit of gentle scare in family shows. But DH swears he was the same as a kid before he got into horror.

Bumping 'cos I started this too late in the evening, but I'm curious to know about people's mismatches.

We have VERY different interests!

I like reading fiction and history. (DH only ever reads books about sport, music or business).

I love opera and ballet. Love Renaissance art. I’m a bit of an ancient civilisations geek - Greece, Egypt. I like galleries and museums.( DH couldn’t be less interested in all of this)

I love France and Italy (DH is underwhelmed with Paris and has zero interest in my beloved Rome and Florence).

I love yoga and meditation (DH doesn’t ‘get’ it and thinks it’s all a bit woo).

I was also a raver in my youth - acid house than house and jungle. DH was a soul boy thinks my music is hideous Grin.

DH loves football. Watching it, travelling for it, talking about it. He works in football. It’s his complete obsession. I have zero interest. I don’t even understand the game properly Grin.

We share interests, too, though. Politics, travel, some music, and our film & TV taste is similar. We rub along alright after 20+ years together.

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 26/03/2023 10:06

We have a huge overlap in tastes - one of the reasons I married him - but there are areas that we don't cross on.

Books/films - He's into a lot of fantasy/dystopia stuff that leaves me cold - Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, that kind of thing. I can just about cope with watching LOTR once in a while, and that's my lot. He doesn't venture into literary fiction, whereas I read a lot of it. Other than sci-fi/fantasy, he mainly reads thrillers, but I love a good thriller too so that's a crossover.

Music - He can't stand 80s electronica whereas I love it, he likes the heavier end of metal whereas I don't go further than, say, Metallica. Pretty much everything else we have similar tastes, including liking the same Classical and folk music.

Runnerduck34 · 26/03/2023 10:09

DH avid cyclist, runner and swimmer, does triathlons and ironmans, I have zero interest, Im very unsporty.

I love history, gardening and family tree research, DH has absolutely no interest in these.

JanesSadLittleLife · 26/03/2023 10:14

Music. I love music and how the melody can make me feel happy or sad, or how lyrics resonate with me. I know the lyrics to millions of songs, I like hearing the words and how they flow with the song.

DH simply can't understand why I sometimes zone out when listening, or why I want to hear a song all the way through. To him it's just background noise, it means nothing to him. He can put a commercial radio station on and barely registers the difference between the adverts and the music. He's also happy to sit looking at his phone in silence, I like some music.

SBAM · 26/03/2023 10:17

I like sewing, reading and gardening. I barely turn on the TV, unless it’s for something specific.

DH has TV shows he gets really into that he watches with friends, plays video games, and coding. He doesn’t like reading fiction, he gets hay fever so doesn’t garden.

Together, we like baking, certain TV shows, board games.

We are both introverted types, and happy to do things apart but together eg I read a book on the sofa while he’s playing a video game.

Echobelly · 26/03/2023 10:26

I never thought I'd marry someone who wasn't a HUGE music fan - not even of music I like necessarily, but oddly enough I've ended up with someone just... not that into it.

I like to listen to whole albums, he gets bored of one album after a few songs - a bit like yours @JanesSadLittleLife , it's mostly kind of background to him.

We do have some music taste in common, but he doesn't feel anything like as deeply as I do about it.

Many, many things.

Books - he likes Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman etc, I prefer memoirs, stories of women's lives etc. Films and TV similar.

Sport - he likes F1 which I couldn't be less interested in and I love football which he couldn't care less about, I still go to matches with my school friends.

Music - not a big part of my life, I don't dislike it but will nearly always default to silence or talk (podcasts etc). I can't remember when Inlast used my spotify account. Whereas DH would have music on all day every day which I absolutely cannot bear even more so if it has inane chat eg music radio stations.

Gardening - I love and have an allotment. He does a bit of lifting and shifting but otherwise no interest or knowledge.

Cycling - he loves it, I haven't used my bike for years.

AgnesX · 26/03/2023 10:31

Terry Pratchett's books, he just doesn't get the humour.

Lovegossip · 26/03/2023 10:40

Dh loves horror films, I can't watch them so he only watches them when I've gone to bed, he's a night owl so 2am is when he comes to bed, I'm more of at 11pm bed timer

He also loves transformers and has many many of them on display, he likes to show me the before and after and I humour him but secretly I'm 🤷‍♀️

I love pimple popper videos and he won't look at them and I love football where he doesn't but he will watch the game with me and then talk all the way thru asking what's going on etc

smileladiesplease · 26/03/2023 10:47

Me... chalet school books

Dh formula 1!

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 26/03/2023 10:51

I've been subtly trying to convert mine by putting ear wax videos on the televisionGrin

bertieb7 · 26/03/2023 11:02

DH isn't a big cheese lover 😶 I will never understand that!

smileladiesplease · 26/03/2023 11:15

Oh I love pimple poppers

I am sneaky by linking the video on my tablet to the YouTube link on the TV, they then pop up on his feed when he's not expecting it 😁

KohlaParasaurus · 26/03/2023 12:41

My DH will happily spend all day watching cycling (all varieties) and skiing on a screen. Near-identical figures doing the same activity over and over again. I'd be hypnotised to sleep. Fortunately, we're both happy to watch team sports and track athletics.

I like choosing and cooking food and eating nice meals out. DH is happy to eat whatever I put on the table or go to restaurants with me, but would be equally happy dining on custard creams in front of a screen while watching cycling and skiing.

Lovegossip · 26/03/2023 15:52

Oh and DH loves to cook so he does all the dinners

ApolloandDaphne · 26/03/2023 16:13

I love to sing and am in a choir. DH cannot sing at all and seems impressed with my singing skills.
On the other hand DH loves to run and is training for a marathon. I have a hip issue and find walking difficult so I am impressed with his running skills.

Notanotherhousepost · 26/03/2023 16:15

Knitting
computer games
computers in general

Eyesopenwideawake · 26/03/2023 16:17

Me : F1, James O'Brien, soul/disco music, brussel sprouts (!)

Him : SciFi series, opera, prog rock and house music, tabasco on everything.

Luckily we have enough space to indulge ourselves without driving the other mad.

LadyMargaretDevereux · 26/03/2023 16:17

Me and dh are really very different in our interests. Fortunately we have the same political views, same sense of humour and like some TV in common. We also both like travelling in Italy and we adore our grown up dc. 36 years married this year.

Echobelly · 26/03/2023 20:18

My mum was not at all into classical music when they met, but my dad got her into it - and she got him into rock!

Dh.. cycling, kayaking... but not just for pleasure. He is competitive. I enjoy pottering down the river in my kayak on a nice day but have zero interest in improving my speed or technique.
He watches Eastenders. I am not a fan of soaps. Otherwise we basically only watch David Attenborough Grin

I love music, and love learning, and learned to play the guitar (badly) and am now learning to play the piano. Dh is tone deaf.

I live to read.. love fantasy (Robin Hobbs type) but will read anything and can stay up all night with a good book. Dh takes about 6 months to get through one and until he was 50 never read anything that wasn't an instruction manual.

However I did get him into musicals and we love going to those together :)
