How can I relax? Landlord harassment

does anyone have advice on how to deal with the stress of landlord harassment? I am being evicted so they can move back in themselves and it’s nightmare. Bullying messages, showing up at the house without warning, false accusations. I think they want me to leave earlier than I have to, so it’s just a mind game they won’t get physical or anything. But it’s really getting to me. I can’t relax when I’m at home as the door doesn’t bolt from inside. I worry I’ll get another bullying message every time I look at my phone. With work stress or whatever home has always been a safe space but now I feel like I have nowhere to escape to. I haven’t done anything wrong by the way, I have agreed to everything and haven’t over stayed. How do I cope better with this and find a way to calm down? I can’t stay this stressed I can’t even sleep.

Are they letting themselves into your home when they show up?

no I told them i knew that was against the law. I don’t know if they’ll ignore that though as it’s not like I’d be able to stop them and the police wouldn’t come out for something like that.

Have you been served a section 21?

Did you agree a date you will be leaving?

Daffodilsandbeer · 25/03/2023 20:33

Ok and are you leaving in line with your section 21?

So what are rhey bullying you over? It’s hard to understand?

35965a · 25/03/2023 20:36

It’s irrelevant if OP is leaving as per the s.21. Even if went beyond the date and to court and bailiffs were evicting her there’s no excuse for this behaviour.

Contact Shelter and also your council. If they’re intimidating you also contact the police.

SirChenjins · 25/03/2023 20:38

What exactly are they doing when they turn up and what are they saying in their bullying messages?

soupey1 · 25/03/2023 20:42

I know they haven’t yet entered without permission but you say you can’t bolt the door from inside so get some solid doorstops and push them under from your side so that they could not physically enter without you removing them.

That’s a good idea, thanks. I think it’s stuff like this I need, I can’t change the situation but there must be things I can do to feel a bit calmer or safer. I just can’t stop worrying about it.

I am a Landlord:

They are breaking the law.
Until you move out, other than an emergency, you are entitled to the “quiet enjoyment of your home.”
Contact Shelter for advice but meanwhile push those doorstops under the door.

Contact your local council and keep all the messages. If you feel unsafe in anyway then also log it online with the local police. It's important everything is documented. If your landlord has other properties you may not be the only one they are harassing - obviously that doesn't make it any easier for you.
AFAIK You can actually change the locks whilst you are living there as long as you change them back as you leave. This was what shelter advised my friend - we only knew that the landlord had tried to let themselves in unannounced because of the abusive messages sent when their key didn't work.
Sympathies because it is a horrible situation to be in as most people assume you must be a bad tenant rather than believe a landlord could behave in such a horrible way. Hope you are soon out of the situation.

Thank you this is so kind and really good advice. It helps to feel less alone, although of course I wish your friend hadn’t had to go through it too. And yes to be really clear in case people are reading this wrong - I really haven’t done anything, I’m a responsible person
