Homemade sushi

Does anyone make it at home? Is it worth it or does it never taste as good as restaurant quality?

I've just discovered a love for it but only ever had the Lidl and Tesco varieties. I'm tempted to have a go myself.

Any recipes and tips welcome!

It’s not too hard if you go for cheaper and easier fillings. Find a recipe.
short grain rice (proper sushi rice is great but ordinary short grain works fine). Rice wine vinegar and sugar (can use ordinary white vinegar if you’re on a budget). Omelette and mushrooms fried in soy sauce is a good cheap easy filling, as is tinned tuna mixed with a bit of mayonnaise and some cucumber. Crab sticks and veg is easy too. You need to buy the nori sheets and ginger and wasabi if you like it.

It’s worth looking online to see if you have a Chinese/Japanese/East Asian specialist supermarket locally - they will almost certainly have nori sheets and condiments cheaper than your ordinary supermarket. It’s much easier to make good maki rolls with a bamboo mat and some cling film.

Yep, we're doing it tomorrow night. Tuna and mayo, teriyaki chicken, and smoked salmon. It's a bit fiddly to begin with, but if you do it often enough, it's really quite easy!

Waitrose have started selling ready prepared sushi rice in a packet which takes a LOT of the faff out of it!

We make it a lot, my DD6 loves it. We usually have omelette and tinned Mackrel and also finely chopped cucumber, spring onions and carrots. It is time consuming to make, but we enjoy it. And you definitely need one of those bamboo rolling mats. We try to make extra to last for lunches the next day.
