Adding kids to car insurance or separate policy?

Oldest child is having driving lessons so we are looking at adding him to our car insurance to get some extra practice. Is that the cheapest option or is he better off having his own separate insurance as a learner driver? Does anyone have any experience of doing that? Thanks in advance

We added DS to ours through Direct Line. They gave no claims bonus discount to named drivers so by the time he bought his own car he had 2 years no claims bonus to transfer to his own policy with the same company. This was a few years back so don't know if they still do that.

Marmalade gave us a good PAYG option where you pay for the miles rather than the time!
