Anyone here know about council tax bandings? Moving to a bigger house soon

Hi all we currently live in a two up two down and council tax is band D. We have had an offer accepted on a house very close to us, which was marketed as a two bed but has a single storey extension for a second bathroom and a family room. It's the same style as ours although it's a semi detached and we are currently in a mid terrace. The loft has also been converted but is only really useable as an office or storage space due to head height and small floor space. The local houses round about which are CT band E are three bedroom semis with a separate dining room.

The current owners extended the home themselves so they will no doubt still be on band D CT and I'm unsure if the extension means we will be put up to band E after the move. Does anyone know what the criteria is for CT banding (is it bedroom numbers or overall number of rooms etc), tried to look on our local council's page but there's no real useful info there. We're in Scotland if that makes a difference thanks

Using the link in the reply above, look at the band your future house is in. It also has an improvement box - if this is ticked it means that the banding will change once the property is sold (they don't penalise existing owners for improvements, just the next owners).

I'm not sure if it says what the band will increased by, only that it will (it could be 2 bandings).

See if there are any similar extended houses that you could see the banding on.

Good luck

Thanks for the link but it only works for England and Wales properties.

Click on the link and click the but that says for Scotland click here. Then you will know what it currently is and if it's been rebanded since extending.

Bandings depend on value, not number of bedrooms.

Best bet would be to phone the local council and ask, they are very helpful at this sort of thing.

Bands shown do not include the effect on value of alterations or improvements carried out by the current owners.
Only when a house is sold will they be taken into account and from the date of sale.
There may however be a delay in amending the Band, pending information required by the Assessor becoming available.

Quote from the Scotland section on the link posted above.

Whilst it may well increase, sometimes improvements aren't big enough to increase the banding. We had an assessment shortly after we moved into our house and the banding didn't go up.
