Pink coloured squid with a bleachy smell

DH got some squid from a fish monger today. I was preparing it for cooking this evening and when I opened the pack it looks pink-ish and has a slight bleachy smell. My 5 yo DD and I had a very nasty food poisoning episode a few weeks ago (I suspect from a pack of prawns that were within the sell by date) and I really don't want to take a chance. The squid was exceptionally cheap too.

I'm not cooking it for myself or DD but DH is happy to eat it. Would you eat it? I don't know a lot about sea food but haven't come across this colour or smell before.

I always go by what my nose thinks

Had some dodgy salt cod go pink on me once. I wouldn't trust it.

I'm sorry, I have no idea but bumping for more experienced chefs! (We're just having spaggie bol tonight 🤣)

No, I wouldn't eat it. It's a sign that it's deteriorating.

I thought this was going to be be “your vagina is called after the last thing you ate, your favourite colour, and the last thing you smelled” threads.

I’d skip the squid.

Lavenderfowl · 24/03/2023 18:44

Fresh fish doesn’t smell…and if it’s a strange colour as well I’d put it straight in the bin ….

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 24/03/2023 18:55

Could it be an ammonia smell? Like hair colour? If so, ditch it. It’s off.

Xarrie · 24/03/2023 20:11

I love squid but an ammonia smell isn't good.

Placesleisure · 24/03/2023 20:56

Thank you everyone 😀, the squid has gone in the bin!

No, it wasn't ammonia, just a slight bleachy smell which is odd. DH thinks it might be the surface on which they cut the fish or clean the squid 🐙. It did look dodgy though, never seen that colour on the squid, DH told me at first that he thinks it was a different kind of squid, slightly pink 😀, hence my post here.

Ah, it takes me back to my time on deep sea trawlers in squid season. Digging them out of the slumps at the end of a 6 week trip and they’d be completely purple by then! Def the right call to bin it OP 🦑

Isn't this part of that old joke...

'Here's that six quid you lent me'?

I'm not from the UK 😀, not aware of any squid jokes 😀
