As above what drinks are warming in the morning but not tea, coffee or almond milk that don't affect iron absorption please?

Camomile
Fruit teas
Ovaltine
Warm milk
Hot lemon and honey
Cup soup
Bouillon
Bovril

SirVixofVixHall · 24/03/2023 12:17

Old fashioned cocoa is very nice in the morning, and not too sweet as you add your own sugar.

Laptopneeded · 24/03/2023 12:17

Thanks at @ODFOx unfortunately milk inhibits iron absorption
Bovril isn't such a bad idea though

Are oat milk based drinks OK?

Stepuptowardsinfinity · 24/03/2023 12:20

Hot water with a big squeeze of lemon juice and lemon slices in it. Vit C is needed for iron absorption so it will help that too.

jenjenlinks · 24/03/2023 12:20

There are lots of milk subs you can make lots of drinks with. Pea "milk" does not affect iron.
Or any herbal infusion, boullion, bovril, ribena/cordials, hot water with lemon....

jizzlord · 24/03/2023 12:21

I take mine at night on an empty stomach with orange juice to aid absorption.

SinisterKnitter · 24/03/2023 12:23

It's a blast from my hippy past and I wasn't even sure it was still available, but what about Barley Cup?

Anyonebut · 24/03/2023 12:27

Miso soup (just miso paste, our boiling water on top) Sometimes I add polenta “grains” to make it a whole breakfast on the go.

Laptopneeded · 24/03/2023 12:32

@jenjenlinks.
I didn't even know such a thing as pea milk existed!

It's just the caffeine in coffee that causes probs (I think tannin may be an issue in tea but not a tea drinker so double check). Oat milk is nicer in coffee than dairy imo. So decaf coffee with oat milk.

musingsinmidlife · 24/03/2023 12:34

I take iron at night before I go to sleep. Then it doesn't interfere with any absorption and any iron symptoms are mitigated by being asleep.

I take my other pills (that can't be taken with iron) in the morning. I would never give up my tea with oat milk!

I was brought up on that, what a blast from the past 🤣

Stepuptowardsinfinity · 24/03/2023 12:43

Does Horlicks still exist?

Yes. Contains iron and B12, and very neutral, so takes on other flavours really easily. I'd say its the best plantmilk substitute for milk.

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 24/03/2023 12:47

I'd try oat milk and pea milk. Not all brands are equal. Our favourite oat milk is brand Minor Figures.

It makes a nice hot chocolate with clipper drinking chocolate, or could you have Decaf tea?

Glad it's not just me remembers it! I'm kinda tempted to try it for old times sake.

pumpkinpiee · 24/03/2023 12:56

As others have suggested, take at night with orange juice

I'm going to get some!

Wildspace · 24/03/2023 13:01

Yes - barley cup or chicory.

Arses, just realised I can't as I'm gluten free (the fact it's called barley cup should have alerted me!).

Oh well.

mindutopia · 24/03/2023 13:27

Could you not just take it with a meal later in the day and a glass of orange juice or a vitamin C tablet? A splash of milk in tea or coffee will not significantly impair iron absorption anyway. I would just enjoy my tea and then eat 30 minutes later or so and take vitamins then.

MrsCarson · 24/03/2023 13:37

Just take it later in the evening with a bit of orange juice.

Laptopneeded · 24/03/2023 16:16

@mindutopia

It's not just the milk it's also the tea itself. I drink copious amounts.

I would prefer something milk like with cinnamon and honey perhaps
