I'm no expert but that looks like a very basic laptop. 64GB is not much memory - my phone has that much and it's at the bottom of the range.

If you're not sure what all those numbers mean, here's some decoding:

14" - the distance between opposite corners of the screen, on the diagonal

AMD 3020e - the processor. You want as fast a one as you can afford. This one runs at 1.2 to 2.6 gHz. For comparison, the fastest one on the market now (Intel i9) can go as high as 6.0 gHz. But that's for stuff like gaming and video editing.

4GB RAM - the "working" memory which the computer uses to run tasks

64GB - the storage memory

SSD - solid state drive, meaning it doesn't have a disc hard drive and will boot up quickly. Most small laptops have this now.

You didn't say how much it cost but I reckon you could do better by going to the manufacturers' web pages and looking for laptops on offer. This Dell one has slightly better specs for £259.

I genuinely appreciate this squib and thank you for your time

my budget could stretch to 400 if I do some extra work this month

maybe that’s not enough of a budget

You're welcome! The Acer looks better - twice as much memory. What processor chip does it use? Acer have a good reputation. You could also look at Chromebooks.

Would you ever use it for streaming films etc, especially when in bed? Be honest about what you would use it for long term.

Slimjimtobe · 24/03/2023 11:23

No wouldn’t use it for films or anything

word processing and email
saving PowerPoints and recording them (mp4)
kids might use it for homework (but I’ve an old one they would use)
making photo books and what not

I’m not an overly techy person but would use it daily for joining in webinars and all that (tend to just watch Netflix in the living room - Downton Abbey on repeat🤣🤣)
