London theatre recommendations

I would like to take my daughters (10 & 12) to a show in london … we’re not regular theatre goers so am after some recommendations. Think we’d like a musical, maybe Matilda? Definitely not Frozen! They like some of the songs in Six, would that be a good one?

it’s a lot of money so I don’t want to get it wrong.

My GD aged 11 loved Six. As we left the theatre she asked me to rebook. Your DDs are just the right age. Go and enjoy. Alternatively, The King and I.

MissMarplesbag · 22/03/2023 21:20

The Lion King at the Lyceum theatre at Covent Garden. Dd is going to see it next week with her year group, she can't wait. Very excited to see it.

Frozen is fantastic, went to see it with my 18 year old and was much better than expected. Really like Matilda and Six too.
Mama Mia is another to consider.

I had wanted to see The lion king for years and thought it was good didn’t live up to expectations. I wasn’t too keen on Wicked either but some really rave about it.

Floralnomad · 22/03/2023 21:23

If you decide to go the non musical route The Play that goes wrong is still on in London , it’s a mischief theatre production and very good .

Six is fantastic - not too long, and almost more like a concert than a musical. It’s also a great message for young girls - all about recognising that women are more than just wives & girlfriends. The songs are all very good and the final number is a fantastic ending to a great evening of fun.

Matilda also has some lovely songs, and is a very good show. Another good option could be The lion king. It’s a classic, and I’ve taken friends/family of all ages and all have loved it - much more wider age appeal than Frozen which is fun but young and guaranteed to have lots and lots of young families attending!

I’d also recommend &Juliet. It’s got great songs - lots that the girls will probably know already as it’s full of pop songs and has a similarly ‘girl power’ theme to Six. Definitely one of the best new musicals out there at the moment.

&Juliet closes on Saturday

After watching the film version of Matilda the musical we've booked to see it at the theatre - I have high hopes for it.

Wicked is fantastic.

Lion king always gets rave reviews.

&Juliet closes on Saturday

Oh! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Oops - thanks @Pinkflipflop85.

MajorCarolDanvers · 22/03/2023 21:33

Frozen is the best musical in London. I've been three times myself.

After that I'd say wicked is the best. The Lion King did nothing for me. Matilda is alright or they might enjoy Mamma Mia.

christmastreefarm · 22/03/2023 21:35

&juliet is fab but closes Saturday, it is touring in 2024 though. Six is good. If there are three of you the boxes werent too expensive. If you look on seatplan you can see photos and reviews and work out what seats may be cheaper but still have good views.

Pearfacebananapoop · 22/03/2023 22:08

Back to the Future is brilliant - but show them the film first to see if they'd like it.

Frozen though I know you said no but it is phenomenal. DH still says it's the best show he's seen and he didn't want to go!

buzzing · 22/03/2023 22:10

Thank you all … think I’m leaning towards Six. Will keep an eye out for &Juliet touring too.

Frozen is breath taking and I loathe musicals 😂

@buzzing took my 15 year old to watch it a few weeks ago - we were both bored! Lots of singing songs made famous on tik tok apparently but nothing else happens - no actual story or other chats here so was just 6 women singing and talking with a moral at the end

lion king and mamma Mia - both amazing and lots going on so good visuals.

Raineth · 22/03/2023 22:21

Back to the future is fantastic.

premicrois · 22/03/2023 22:22

Back to the future - I wouldn't worry about showing them the film either. I'm not hugely into it but the musical is top of my list of all time.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 22/03/2023 22:24

Matilda is fantastic. Took our kids last year and we all absolutely loved it. Brilliant family show.

LIZS · 22/03/2023 22:27

Wicked - You can often get discounted seats. Hamilton, although may not suit younger dc. If later in the year Wizard of Oz is opening.

Floralnomad · 22/03/2023 22:31

I really hated Wicked , would happily have left at the interval but was in company .

buzzing · 22/03/2023 22:31

Argh, now I’m thinking Six isn’t right … I’m so bloody indecisive and it’s a lot of money to spend if it turns out to be the wrong decision.

Think I might need to toss a coin 😁

Mrs Doubtfire is opening in May

gogohmm · 22/03/2023 22:35

In the summer holidays they have discounted tickets for children. It's been a while since mine were eligible but they used to be a great deal around mid August
