Reading on the loo

Yes, I know loads of people will think it is gross but I used to do this all the time as a child. I'd get home from school and go and sit on the loo for half an hour with a newspaper or magazine. My parents bought a vast array of newspapers and magazines. I swear, I learned half of what I know while reading on the loo. My kids don't do this but I'm thinking of getting in some actual papers and encouraging it.

I don't do it anymore does anyone else? Phones on the loo are somehow utterly revolting to me and I don't do that either. At least the paper or newspaper gets put in recycling at the end of the day/week so it doesn't seem so bad.

Sitting on the loo for long periods is bad for you and can give you piles! Plus it blocks other people from using the loo!

Better to encourage reading in a more suitable spot.

There was always a basket of books in our bathroom when was a kid (still is actually), I read in the bath but I know my father still sits on the loo reading, Jack Reacher at the moment and a flake wrapper for a bookmark, though he told me recently since I subscribed to a newspaper app and shared it with him the bookmark hasn't moved much, I'm not going to tell a 78 year old that mumsnet doesn't approve.

People sit on the loo this long?

Twizbe · 22/03/2023 17:02

My brother did this.

He'd spend hours sat on the loo reading. We had a whole library in our bathroom. He'd read in the shower too (using a plastic bag and goggles over his glasses)

My mum always tells the story of when we got a new VCR and my brother took the instruction book to the loo. An hour later he came down and set it up for them lol.

I used to read on the loo a bit as well - not as much as him, but I did it as the books were there.

I still do it now in a way. Being on the toilet is my quiet time when in theory the kids don't bug me for something.

I've never considered it odd before.

Private Eye is great for reading on the loo.

Yeah, we had a small pile of books in the bathroom on the windowsill. Some that my sister and I had brought in and left, and others that were humorous or interesting light reads that my parents purposely put in for houseguests!

Now that I think about it, that's a bit odd hahah.

I don't because I'm an in and out type, the husband however, appears to read war and peace from cover to cover when he goes.
It's a wonder he doesn't take bloody root on it.

Funny I was thinking about this the other day. I used to all the time as a kid. Now I don't.

Harebrain · 22/03/2023 17:26

I still read on the loo. I can’t “go” unless I have a book to read.

Johnisafckface · 22/03/2023 18:52

I used to do this all the time as a kid and young adult. My whole family did it, we had a magazine/book rack in the bathroom that we could choose from.
