Piano players / music readers please help

Dd is teaching herself piano. I learnt a bit but it was nearly 40 years ago so I'm not much help to her
in the attached photo, the left hand notes with the swooping link between them, should they be played as one longer note or as two separate notes close together?
hope that makes sense

One note. You play the first note in the bar at the same time as 'you' and the second one to 'me' and then play it till the end of the bar. (It's a tied note)

Just one key press, lasting the time of oth notes. They are tied notes.
