Indefinite Leave to Remain- is BRP compulsory?

My biometric residence permit card expired in December and I'm about to apply for renewal but I've just read that it may not be compulsory- it doesn't say on the gov website that it is. I thought the BRP was my visa document but it's not so i think I'm correct saying that I can have ILtR without a BRP^^ - correct me if I'm wrong!

I've also read that "biometric residence permits haven't been around for 10 years"(???) and there's a different system coming in 2024 so I'm really confused as to what to do.

My employers haven't contacted me either so maybe I don't need a BRP.

Just to add... I have no plans to travel abroad before the new system comes in 2024.

Not sure if you need one but I work in HR, do regular ID checks for international employees and BRPs are still around

Our staff all need a BRP, ARC or share code showing right to remain/work/study.
