where is Steve Allen when you need him?

feeling very very rough, looks like another morning in bed, if not a whole day. What can I listen to? I need something light, entertaining, but something that actually connects me to the real world, rather than isolates me in my bedroom. - human voices, not music.

Please suggest something I can half pay attention to to keep me company while dozing on and off. It can be on catch up, but recent, no more than a day or two old

Steve Allen fit the bill perfectly! But I don't know of anyone else like that -

Thank you

I know this sounds weird but I'm listening to the Alan Rickman diaries!

It's like a cross between the shipping forecast, news bulletin and a comedy

Get well soon x

Nimbostratus100 · 21/03/2023 07:19

Thank you -I will try that!

I love Conversations From a Long Marriage on BBC sounds/R4.

ssd · 21/03/2023 08:42

Sounds rough @Nimbostratus100 , get better soon.

newnamethanks · 21/03/2023 09:04

Yes, annoying as he was, there's an SA shaped hole. Has LBC left his old podcasts up?

goingtotown · 21/03/2023 09:26

I miss Steve Allen 4am-7 early mornings are not the same.

follyfoot37 · 21/03/2023 09:32

I don't understand how women can like Steve Allen. He was a misogynist, a snob and a self-centred hater of anything or anyone whom he deemed unworthy
Try BBC sounds or Spotify for podcasts or Radio 4's 'The Forum' - I have learnt much from the latter - v interesting topics discussed

Shitfather · 21/03/2023 09:35

Nick Abott on LBC is fantastic! You can listen to his shows via the app.

Nimbostratus100 · 22/03/2023 06:24

couldn't find Alan Rickman, but Conversations from a Long Marriage was great. I might try Nick Abbot, but LBC itself is so tedious and nothing at this time of the morning now! Radio 4 is slightly better.

Anyone have any more suggestions for today please?

There's a David someone, American humorous raconteur who lives in the uk. Has a very light, almost feminine voice. He's gay. On radio 4 around 7pm.

You might find it with all those clues Blush.

He's very gentle but witty. Perfect for when you are under the weather.

VeryInteresting12 · 22/03/2023 07:21

That’s David sedaris.
he’s wonderful.

Tbf, I found Steve Allen to be such a small minded and mean man. Not my favourite.

waterlego · 22/03/2023 07:24

David Sedaris. Yes, he’s very entertaining.

I like the afternoon dramas on R4. Each one is only 45 mins and there are loads of them on the BBC Sounds app. I put them on when I’m doing housework. They’re fiction though, sounds like that might not be what you’re looking for.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 22/03/2023 08:08

The recent Amanda Blanc Desert Island Discs was fascinating, DH and I were gripped in the car and her music choices were Ave as someone born mid 70s. She’s not a household name but she’s CEO of Aviva insurance. There’s always loads of good other ones too

lake wobegon days by Garrison Keillor is perfect for this too if you can find it. Also used to HOWL at Clare in the Community (with Sally Phillips)

picklemewalnuts · 22/03/2023 08:08

Thank you for knowing his name! That will be useful for me to find him again- I tend to catch him by accident on the way to meetings.

Nimbostratus100 · 22/03/2023 08:09

I will definitely try David Sedaris, and these other suggestions, thank you

Good lord, I didn't even realise Steve Allen had left LBC. I usually only listen past 7am when Ferrari is on, but on occasion I'd be up a bit earlier I always found SA a bit...moany.

Rosula · 22/03/2023 22:11

I gave up on Steve Allen because It was getting increasingly annoying the way he constantly claimed that he was "sick to death" of things. For someone as constantly sick to death as he claimed, he survived a hell of a long time.
