I am paid reasonably well but as a result I get little help from anywhere with anything, despite being a single mum. I’ve realised that going back to work in November will mean a 1,400 bill a month for childcare and commuting costs a month of around 350. I will have very little money to live off and only be marginally better off than if I struggled through a couple of extra months on savings/child maintenance. I would therefore really like these extra two months with the baby so they could go to nursery at 14 months which I’m more comfortable with. I’d then at that point like to use the holiday I have accrued this year, from next January, by taking two days off a week so the baby can be phased into nursery and it will be cheaper all round.

my maternity leave officially ends at the end of October. Usually our workload is quieter in December so I can’t imagine there will be an immediate need for me to come back before January but how do companies approach this sort of thing? Is it just a case of asking and seeing? I presume I have no rights as the 52 weeks are up in October?

also, can I use two days a week holiday until they run out or can the company refuse this? Thanks

You want to ask work for 2 months unpaid leave and then want to use your holiday to do part time for a few months? Only your work place can answer that.
What will you live on when you’re on unpaid leave?
Does your work place allow you to dip into holiday you haven’t accured yet?
Will your nursery expect you to pay a retainer for the 2 days week you aren’t using until you are full time?

@Marchforward i will have accrued the holiday while on maternity leave. The nursery is happy with this plan if I have it approved at work (already registered with them) but haven’t raised it with work yet.

@juiop you can used accrued leave when your maternity leave ends. Can't see why that would be an issue..

OP, this could get you four weeks? I used it to stretch my maternity leave (wanted to come back at the right time in my work cycle rather than part way through a project - plus extra time with DC of course)

The holiday will depend what rules your company has around using it - if you are for example in a small team where for example only one person can be off at any given time they might say no as it would mean no one else could take a week off till you were fully back, or no one else would be able to take a Friday off.

You could ask for unpaid leave (check to see if you have an unpaid or special leave policy) but they could rightly refuse as your maternity leave period would be over. They might not be happy with you taking unpaid leave when you have remaining holiday though, and ask you to use up your remaining holiday before any unpaid leave is agreed, otherwise you are taking quite a bit of extra time off.

do you have someone covering your maternity leave period? If they can extend this persons contract by a couple of months it shouldn’t make too much difference to your employer unless they need you in particular for something, or as someone mentions above, it prevents others being able to take leave.

also interested to see how you’ll be better financially on unpaid leave though!
