Is it unusual that I only felt pain/contractions in my lower back?

Do people normally feel these across their tummy? I felt literally nothing across the tummy. All pain in lower back. It’s the same when I have period pain.

Sorry should have said I am referring to when in labour

Same. I assumed I wasn't in labour as I assumed contractions would be all over!

Dotcheck · 19/03/2023 07:55

Yes, common. My contractions were there too

Mine were all in my back, but my baby was back to back and apparently it’s normal to feel everything in your back then.

So1invictus · 19/03/2023 07:56

Same. No pain at the front at all.

Orangebadger · 19/03/2023 07:57

My first Labour was all in my back and constant. None of the eaves people talk about. I had a back to back Labour so baby's spine was pressing my lower spine. Having had 2 further labours since neither of which were back to back, all the pain was in my abdomen and came in waves. And oh my god it was so much less painful than in my back!

Do you know if you have/ had a back to back Labour or what baby's position was?

iamnottoofatiamjusttooshort · 19/03/2023 07:58

Yes exactly the same here

No medical problems and did eventually come out but was a shock to me in later pregnancy when it was all stomach 😂

ohfook · 19/03/2023 07:59

All of mine have been in my back the when I had a miscarriage it was like going from hip to hip.

My midwife told me that she often finds where you experience period pain will be where you experience your contractions.

Puygo · 19/03/2023 07:59

No idea what position baby was. But had same experience for both labours

It was quite a while ago now but I have always wondered if it was unusual

My first labour was like this too. My GP thought I had a UTI so I was prescribed antibiotics but the pain kept getting worse and in the end the hospital asked me to come in because they wanted to check the baby was OK.

Like total idiots, we went to the hospital and left behind the carefully packed bag that had been by the front door for weeks!!

Midwife did an internal exam and told us I was 6cm dilated and DH had to go back home and grab everything. Apparently she was back to back.

I had two more babies and had contractions at the front which I actually found much harder to manage.... People say back to back babies are more painful labours but that wasn't my experience.

RWB9 · 19/03/2023 08:03

Mine was the same but back to back too

Gatekeeper · 19/03/2023 08:07

Both mine were like this, all centred round my coccyx and sickening rather than sharp stabbing pains. Both back to back and inverted cervix as well

MudandParsnips · 19/03/2023 08:10

Mine was back to back too, but I had a triple whammy of constant back pain, front contractions and thigh labour. Needless to say, I only have one DC...

AliasGrape · 19/03/2023 08:12

Me too. I went to triage after waters had broken and she asked about contractions and I said ‘no but I’m getting lots of pains in my back and bum’ to be told ‘yeah, those are contractions’.

It was pretty constant too.

Baby was back to back and head in a weird position which never really shifted so ended up with a section.

I think I did get the odd twinge in my stomach but honestly I can’t remember - it’s weird how all the details go so hazy.

Whereland · 19/03/2023 08:13

I wouldn't say mine were in my back or my tummy, more so deep in my groin. Kind of where you'd expect them to be considering it's the cervix opening!

turnthebiglightoff · 19/03/2023 08:13

Yep mine was all in my back, baby was back to back too.

threeplusmum · 19/03/2023 08:14

Mine was definitely in my lower front and boy did I know about it !

Anotheroverreaction · 19/03/2023 08:18

Not unusual if baby was back to back and/or you had an anterior placenta

DanceMonster · 19/03/2023 08:19

Very common. My contractions were all in my back for all 3 of my children.

itsabigtree · 19/03/2023 08:57

If you're baby was back to back this can happen.

DanceMonster · 19/03/2023 09:18

It can happen even if they’re not back to back. Like the OP I feel all of my period pain in my back too, nothing in the front.

3WildOnes · 19/03/2023 09:24

Back and thighs for my first baby and no waves of pain, just a constant pain.
Second and third the pain was tummy, back and thighs but came in waves and was much more manageable.

CatNamedBob · 19/03/2023 09:33

Both of mine were like this, nothing at the front at all
