I just read that it will cost £14 for a packet of 20 smokesticks. I read about a man named Eric who smoked 60 a day, which means he would be spending almost £15000 a year on "smoking himself stupid".

Isn’t it more like 5k per annum?

I can't believe so many people still smoke in this day and age. One of the most common and avoidable cancers is lung cancer. Pretty hard to cure too!

Doesn't it depend on the brand? Also loads of people smuggle bring in cartons from abroad where they're much cheaper.

I believe there is quite a large black market for cigarettes.

I agree with you @blebbleb. My mum died a horrible long drawn out death entirly caused by smoking.

If he can afford it, why not? Some wealthy folk spend that much a year on long-haul holidays, which are damaging the environment. Eric is entitled to damage his own health. We don't all have longevity as a goal.

All those people around Eric might have something to say.

Weed is probably better value now.

Do we know that he has people around him? Not everyone is surrounded by friends and family. If he has loved ones, they might also be smokers.

Do price rises apply to vapes too? I've never smoked so I don't get it - you hardly see cigs these days, everything seems to be vaping.

The duty is on tobacco, which isn't an ingredient of vapes, so a rise in duty should not affect vaping (though general inflation might).
