Hair disaster!

Nellynoo182 · 15/03/2023 11:25

Please help! Tried to box dye my previously balayage blonde hair to an all over ash blonde and the roots (which were previously brown) have gone ginger.

Can’t get into the hairdressers for a month and can’t live like this for that long 🤣

Any DIY advice of what I could do please to achieve an all over blonde? Do I need to bleach my roots? Or just accept I’m wearing a hat for the next month!

Don’t bleach your roots!

I think it looks lovely, was the brown on your hair dye or natural? If dye you could use ColourB4 to take all the dye out and give you an even base before re-dying, but you need to be careful what colour you put on afterwards - I think it needs to be an ash colour but hopefully someone else will confirm!

I know you can use tomato ketchup if it goes green. Don’t know if it would work on ginger. Hopefully somebody will be along that knows how to help

I think it's because a dye isn't strong enough to take brown to blonde so it's lifted it to ginger. I don't think you'll get blonde without bleach, or at least a very high lift blonde dye which might be risky to do yourself.
I would try a purple or blue shampoo firstly to see if it neutralises the orange tones. Or try and get an ash toner.

It looks fine. A couple of washes and will start to blend in

It doesn't look that bad honestly. It's slightly more golden, or strawberry blonde, at the roots but it's not a stark difference. I like the roots colour more though for overall, so wonder if a hairdresser here could tell you how to make the lengths match.

Head And Shoulders. A few washes and it will be fine.
Ime.
And tomato sauce doesn't work.
You just stink!

I really like it!

Try using blue shampoo or a toner maybe.
Just make sure to let your hair rest in-between products

If you do anything, go dark.
In all fairness, you might not like red hair but it is an actual hair colour and as a red head myself, to say going ginger is a 'disaster' isn't exactly sitting well with me.
What you have now, it might not be what you've expected but your hair is a nice colour, red or no red, ginger or no ginger.

Kranke · 15/03/2023 12:11

Purple shampoo won’t work on the darker roots. Try a root smudge with a darker colour such as wella illumina and 1.9% developer. Leave on for 15mins with no heat, comb through to mid length with 5mins to go. You might need to refresh every few weeks or so, but it will give a lovely shine.

Nellynoo182 · 15/03/2023 14:36

Thank you everyone! It looks okay when it is down but when it is all up my roots are very bright and a stark difference to the rest of my hair! I will try the blue shampoo as some Googling has said it can cancel out orange tones - thank you!

& @LookItsMeAgain I wasn’t saying being ginger is a disaster - being ginger roots and then blonde ends is what I was referring to as a disaster. My parents are red heads and I have been (dyed) red before. I now want to be all over blonde, not ginger roots to blonde.

Thank you everyone for your help!

It will fade, as above wash with head and shoulders a few times. I really like it from the picture.

dementedpixie · 15/03/2023 14:51

You cant go from brown to blonde with box dye. You'd need to bleach the brown to get it light enough for blonde. The Ash blonde will have lifted your darker colour and revealed the orange tones. You'd need to lighten the orange to yellow to go blonde
