Any idea what the word(s) underlined in red is?

I am trying to help my 88-year-old dad who has just found out his house isn't registered with the land registry. He can't find the deeds to register it either and is trying to piece together clues about where they could have gone.

Today we found this receipt from decades ago for when he cleared his mortgage balance - it makes some reference to deeds - 'transfer to deedstone' or 'deeds tome' but neither of those makes any sense to me. Any ideas?? Thank you...

Deedstore? (Some kind of repository for deeds?)

Redebs · 13/03/2023 18:11

transfer deeds to me?

Deeds store?

Deeds to me

Redebs · 13/03/2023 18:13

Google deed store

SoupDragon · 13/03/2023 18:14

I think it's Deedstone.

1DoesNotSimplyWalkIntoMordor · 13/03/2023 18:14

Deedstore, compare the r in the words thirteen and hundred and it's the same

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/03/2023 18:14

It's Deedstore. Did they not send him all the docs they held once the mortgage was paid off?

LemonRedwood · 13/03/2023 18:14

I thought Deedstore to start with, but looking at the context I think it's (transfer) Deeds to me

IntergalacticP · 13/03/2023 18:14

Is it an invoice from a solicitor? Transfer to deed store would make sense if so.

Sandysandwich · 13/03/2023 18:14

Transfer deeds to me

JetPlanesMeetingInTheAir2BRefuelled · 13/03/2023 18:15

Deed store

Is the land registry online not up to date for his home? It's only about £3 to access deeds on there

Transfer deeds to me

Yes, I think you're right. Isn't it the receipt for the final payment?

Dartmoorcheffy · 13/03/2023 18:16

Ahhh its a Halifax mortgage. It's deedstore.

It does say it's likely to be a difficult process to register a property if you can't find the deeds.

MeinKraft · 13/03/2023 18:32

It is deed store. Look at the 'r' - same as the r in 'thirteen'

Anskl · 13/03/2023 18:32

Thank you! This is so helpful.

I initially thought it said 'to me' but 'transfer to deeds to me' doesn't make sense.

The land registry has confirmed that the deeds have never been registered for the property. It was purchased over 50 years ago and it wasn't a requirement back then. The conveyancing solicitors don't have them either.

Did they not send him all the docs they held once the mortgage was paid off? Unfortunately, both my parents have dementia so can't confirm either way. All I know is that I've turned their house upside down and can't find any paperwork relating to the mortgage or deeds other than this slip.

Thank you for the contact numbers and links. If we can't find the deeds to register them we will have to go down the route of 'first registration at the Land Registry by a statement of truth' which means gathering as much proof as possible of ownership of the property to recreate the deeds (and we barely have any). This is going to be complicated and expensive so before we resort to this we need to be 100% sure we can't track down the deeds ourselves...

Next step, try and find out some more about this deed store...

transfer deeds to me?

This is how I read it to

Mumsgirls · 13/03/2023 18:51

Worked for them for years. When you repay mortgage you could leave a minimal balance, was originally one pond. Mortgage was technically still in force and they minded the deeds for you. This meant any further borrowing was easier and deeds were safe. Local branch will be able to advise if you want the deeds back. Long retired but that is the basics but terms may have changed.

Binfire · 13/03/2023 18:54

How stressful I hope you manage to track them down!

PizzaPizza56 · 13/03/2023 19:10

I also think it says 'transfer to deed store'. They will be in a strongroom at Halifax. Halifax might not speak to you without LPAs/Deputyship in place. Good luck.
