iPhone sound problem

My DD has an old iPhone 8 which isn't under warranty or insured, so can't take it to our mobile provider, also no Apple Store anywhere near us, so I was hoping wise MNetters may have experienced this problem and have a solution.

There is no sound on calls and voice notes, she can hear audio - Music, videos etc. Strangely there is audio when she makes a video. We've tried blowing air into and cleaning the various microphones and doing a network reset. She's also done the latest update, which I was hoping would fix the problem, but didn't.

Has anyone had this problem and solved it?

Firstly, go through the sound settings just in case something has been changed. Secondly, make sure the switch on the side hasn't been knocked to off.

Sorry, I'd try the switch first as that's easiest to check.

You mean silent mode? I have my iPhone on silent mode, but can still send voice notes. If she sends a voice note to me on WhatsApp for example, I can't hear anything. The phone plays sound, but only produces recorded sound on videos.

She's shut it completely down, waited a couple of minutes, then restarted?

(I had a similar problem with my 7+ a few months ago, and that resolved it.)

Yeah, we did that fist thing. It's a mystery why the microphone is working for when she makes videos but not voice notes or calls. The sound is fine playing for music, YouTube, Netflix etc and she can hear other people on calls, they just can't hear her.

Maybe make a backup, then do a factory reset?

Clutching at straws, but it’s not somehow been muted? Symptoms sound just like when I’ve accidentally pressed the mute button on my iPhone SE2020.
