Memorable Picnic Foods

I have a few which bring back lovely memories. The first is DM’s egg & tomato sandwiches which we often had when I was a kid & I loved them. No salad cream or mayo - just mashed hardboiled egg & tomatoes boiled til you could peel the skins off. Another is a huge bowl of freshly caught shrimps. My parents’ friends had a boat & took us to a secluded beach for a wonderful picnic. There was loads of beautiful food, including the shrimps & some cold custard!
I also remember getting home from picnics & grilling leftover sandwiches for tea. Oh & cold sausages were another favourite.

My dad used to make the nicest cheese and pickle sandwiches, I always used to look forward to those at picnics.

Agree with you on cold sausages too!

Best picnic I ever had was an impromptu one on the train coming back from Paris. Baguette, brie and a bottle of red wine. Bliss.

Scotch eggs are a winner.

My brother (in his 60s) makes the most incredible picnics - fruit, interesting sandwiches, bakes cakes, home made sausage rolls.

I've no idea where this comes from as our go to picnics as a child were jam sandwiches on white bread and orange squash. All accompanied by the fear of wasps.

Maybe it was in reaction to the childhood jam sandwiches....

My grandma used to make cheese and tomato ketchup sandwiches. The tomato ketchup often had a few drops of vinegar in it, so she didn’t waste the bit at the bottom of the bottle. My mum used to make the best corned beef and onion sandwiches with iceberg lettuce. We would always have a hard boiled egg each and pork pies.

my moms home made cheese egg and bacon flan (not quiche no cream)

Cold sausages, pork pie, cheese and tomato sandwiches, hard boiled eggs and my mum's homemade bacon and tomato savoury flan (no cheese!)....delicious!

Oh and to follow, sponge flan case filled with strawberries and quick jel....

A whole rotisserie chicken, a baguette and a bottle of red wine. Consumed at dusk on the banks of the Seine overlooking Notre Dame cathedral.

And my first ever French picnic when I was 14, with my penpal's family on the beach in the south of France. The family transported an entire hamper through dunes and onto a deserted sandy beach, including crockery, chopping board, knives, bottles and wine glasses. Then proceeded to make the tomato salad and the vinaigrette in the sunshine on the beach. And served it with homemade foie gras pâté and Bayonne ham.

Not an actual picnic, but I do dream occasionally about Rattys picnic from Wind in the Willows..
Cheese and pickle on granary bread, crisps and a Mr Kipling angel cake slice otherwise.

• Liquorice allsorts
• 100Plus - on a good day in a cool box filled with ice, on a bad day still in their unopened case of 12 and tepid
• a huge jar of pickled onions, I never ate any but my dad and his best friend always brought one along

  • cold roasted chicken drumsticks

My mum used to make 'ham pin wheels' which I think were just strips of ham with cream cheese rolled up into a spiral. Never seen them since but I loved them!
