Help! How do I not kill these fish??

We have recently got the keys to our new house and after a week of being there have just discovered that the dilapidated pond actually contains some fish. The water level was very low and a couple bobbed up to the surface looking very sad indeed. We have added water from the tap and some dechlorinater, thrown in some fish food but now what?

The pond itself looks totally abandoned. It's full of leaves, there's overgrown cotoneaster hanging in it. There's some loose pipes and what looks to be a broken filter stuck in the bushes surrounding it. I removed some netting today that was disintegrating in the water. Found another poor fish stuck in that and managed to free it.

What on earth do I do now? I don't really want a fish pond, the previous owner didn't mention them at all, but I don't want to let the poor creatures die. I thought maybe I could give them away but would anyone take them? I guess I should clean the pond but I don't know how. How long will they last with no filter?

I've only seen three fish so far. Two that were orange and whitish and one silver one that looked completely different.

My grandmother has a fish pond and they don’t have a filter so they might be fine? She cleans out the algae in summer and feeds the fish once a day. Some of the fish are twenty five years old!

I’m no fish pond expert though :/

Do you have a Pets At Home nearby that could maybe help, give them a call and see what they recommend ?

Find a Facebook group. Put some photos up and someone will come and get them. They're usually worth money so shouldn't be hard.

What fish are they? You might be able to rehome

also puzzles how you missed a pond with fish when viewing the house

Thanks for the advice so far. Wanted to photo today but the fish were being again. Hopefully someone will take them.

Yes we did see the pond when viewing 😄 It looked more of an overgrown murky puddle that was no longer in use.

Outdoor ponds take a lot less looking after than indoor tanks. Get some barley straw, tie in a bundle and put in the pond that will.clear the algae. Then just feed them once a day or even once every few days.

If you relly want rid of them advertise on Facebook etc someone will definitely come and get them.
