Had a terrible night and can’t sleep. Anyone up?

DS is poorly, terrible cough and on off fever so sleep isn’t really happening. He’s now dropped off and is in bed with me but I can’t sleep! Keep checking him every now and then (he’s three) and adjusting him on the pillows so he doesn’t start coughing again.

had to call 111 earlier and wait for a callback and now I should be exhausted and trying to get some sleep but I feel wide awake!

anyone else up?

Been there so many times! Hope he's better soon.

Could you try and listen to an audiobook or something and at least rest?

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 12/03/2023 03:16

Hope he feels better soon. When I can't sleep, I pretend my alarm has gone off and I have a 20 minute opportunity for a nap before I have to get up.

Doesn't always work, but works enough for me to keep trying it.

Another one up 🫤 combination of stress, insomnia and a teenager with an awful cough

Ah hope he feels better soon.

Agree with the Audiobook. Or radio. Something you can listen to so you can shut your eyes and relax a bit

My theory is the more you struggle to sleep the harder it comes! So lie down and relax but don't kick yourself if you can't sleep

Is there anyone else there with you? I'm just thinking if someone can help in the morning when you'll be tired?

Stickybeaks · 12/03/2023 03:47

As soon as I try and concentrate on something like a podcast or audio book it seems to be too much for my brain and I can drift off back to sleep. Otherwise I am wide awake thinking and thinking. Unfortunately I am often awake in the night.

Embelline · 12/03/2023 03:50

Audiobook is a great suggestion actually, I have a lot of podcasts I want to listen to!

yes DH is asleep now so he can be tagged in in the morning so I can get some sleep thankfully!

@JobSeekingMissile insomnia must be awful. This is only one night after a few nights of broken sleep because of his cough and that’s hard enough. I can’t imagine!

sorry to everyone else up. It’s grim!

I am up as well. I don’t ever sleep very well when my other half is in NY on a work trip :(

I hope your little one get a speedy recovery!

I am reading Thursday Murder Club on kindle. It’s pretty witty book about retired MI5 people.

Embelline · 12/03/2023 03:53

@MissLucyLiu I Love that book! There are two sequels now I think? such an easy read.
sorry to hear you don’t sleep well when your OH is away do they travel with work often?

Morning!

I've been awake since 3 as due to go into hospital for a planned operation.

I can't get to sleep but don't want to get up either.

Already been postponed once and terrified of it either being postponed last minute and also of going in!

Hope your ds is feeling better soon - it's rubbish when you can't sleep as you're watching the dc. Hope you have someone who can help out a bit later today so you can get some rest.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 12/03/2023 05:33

Am seconding audiobooks, or the Calm app has loads of sleep stories which I almost guarantee will get you to drop off.

I've currently got some health issues that are keeping me up almost every night, I've managed 4 1/2 hours tonight so far though so I'm quite pleased. May put a sleep story on myself shortly ... but I've left my headphones downstairs and I can't be arsed to get up!

inigomontoyahwillcox · 12/03/2023 05:34

Oh, and I hope your LO is soon on the mend OP, and good luck with your op @SolitudeNotLoneliness - hope you have a speedy recovery.

NomadicSpirit · 12/03/2023 05:38

I had to get up at 3:15 for work. Its finished now, but I'm awake. Half thinking I'll stay up, but I'm a bit knackered, so I'm goin to at least try to go back to sleep.

By the way, when I struggle to sleep, I breath deeply and slowly, focusing on my breathing (in to a count of 4 and out to a count of 4). This engages the body's relaxation side (the parasympathetic nervous system) and helps you drift off.

Thismummyrunstheshow · 12/03/2023 05:41

I've been awake for a few hours now with D&V- not doing so well at the mo!

Embelline · 12/03/2023 05:47

@SolitudeNotLoneliness hope your op goes okay!! He’s sleeping soundly now but I am still wide awake, it’s madness.

@inigomontoyahwillcox love your username. Sorry to hear you are having health issues :( I have been listening to podcasts which has helped pass the time and made me feel a bit dozy but I just can’t seem to drop off.

@NomadicSpirit thanks for the tip I’ll try it! Hope you get some rest.

@Thismummyrunstheshow oh god you poor poor thing. I hope it’s really short lived for you

I'm awake because I think I'm starting the menopause and my period is horrific... pointless going back to bed when I'll have to get up and change my every hour!

Hugs to all that are up and don't want to be

JobSeekingMissile · 12/03/2023 12:01

Absolutely knackered today. Hope we all get some sleep tonight.

NomadicSpirit · 14/03/2023 11:00

Not slept through for ages, but last night I almost did due to some tablets I'm taking for dizziness. However, those tablets have side effects a mile long (including "sudden death") so I'm not sure I'd recommend them. My doctor says the tiredness I am feeling is probably "emotional exhaustion"... and that was that. I'm cured apparently...

Embelline · 14/03/2023 21:25

Aw I’m sorry people are struggling. I’m still having broken sleep so feel
permanently exhausted. How’s everyone doing?
