Is there a way I can find out when my gran died?

I want to find out how old my gran was when she died. There is no family to ask. I think it was between 2000 & 2010. I don't have her date of birth but I think it was in 1910. I've been through every record at the GRO but can't see her. Any ideas?

Have you tried this?

www.gov.uk/search-will-probate

If she had probate granted (e.g. if she had a property to sell or any major assets), if you put in her names and a year, it should come up. Obviously you may have to try a few years. The actual search is free. If you want a copy then ou have to pay.

Hopefully she didn't have a very common name.

Have you tried searching census records for her date of birth? Or Ancestry is a good place to search records of births and christenings.

Are you spelling her name right - has she got a name that could have different spellings? Do you know the area where she died - maybe your search of the area is too narrow.

If you know her birthday but not what year, FindMyPast 1939 search can be quite good as it allows you to search by what you know of the name, using asterisk as wildcards, and by day/month with a wider range of years.

Sorry, posted too soon! Once you have the DOB in full from the 1939 Register, you've got a basis for searching both birth and death records on Ancestry.
