Tumble dryer, outside vent

There's a vent on the outside wall for the tumble dryer. At some stage or another my mother was outside and she dismantled the vent. She said she was cleaning it and there was a lot of fluff in it. The components of the vent are now sitting in a tool box.

I am not too happy about this because there is now a wide open hole outside. Surely this would be an entrance point for any mice or rats, would it not? What do you guys think? My mother doesn't want me to put the cent back on and she said that she would rather live with rats than have a fire in the tumble dryer. Surely the vent is cleaned now and there would be much less of a chance of a fire after cleaning.

I am seeing some behaviours in her that doesn't seem right on and off and I think maybe there might be the possibility of something happening with her and her mind.

What do you guys think? Is it safe to leave the vent wide open?

This is the hole where the cover used to be. It's wide open. I would imagine this will be a risk for rodents.
