.... therefore writing 'ect' as a shortening merely reveals you are pronouncing it incorrectly. As you were

Isn't it et cetera rather than etcetera?

Yarnosaura · 10/03/2023 19:49

It's etc. and et cetera.

If you're gonna be a pedant at least do it properly Grin

Yarnosaura · 10/03/2023 19:50

Yes, this.

Et cetera is Latin for 'and the rest'. Similar to et al. Et alia: and the others.

The only thing more futile than correcting minor spag errors on the Internet is correcting them and getting it wrong.

Random789 · 10/03/2023 20:07

When people write 'ect' I suspect it is usually because they have typed carelessly and accidentally switched the letters, not because they don't know the correct term.
Then they leave the error in place because they know that everyone will understand what they mean and because the whole point of using the term in the first place was to save time.

Random789 · 10/03/2023 20:11

... or perhaps they are using 'ect' deliberately, as an abbreviation for ectoplasm, and they mean us to understand that whatever else is in their little list is covered in slime.

Me too. Big fan. But you can't use it unless you really know your audience, in case they think you're
a) wrong; or
b) a wanker
