Panicking over TV Licence now

neilyoungismyhero · 09/03/2023 15:23

Think I might have shot myself in the foot although of course I can reverse the decision. I've just cancelled our tv licence. We watch a lot of Netflix and Itv X and other ITV/Sky channels so decided we could save ourselves some money by getting rid off the BBC channels.
I'm now not sure what exactly we can watch after reading a bit late about the exemptions.
Does anyone know definitively what we can watch without a licence please.

You can watch anything that’s not ‘live tv’ and nothing on iPlayer. Live TV includes things like subscription sports channels, even if you are paying for them, so be careful. This is afaik, others may know more.

Not worth panicking about. If they haven't caught you and you realise in time you can either stop watching things you now know you shouldn't or pay for a licence.

Roundandnour · 09/03/2023 15:31

On demand apart from iplayer you don’t need a license - so Netflix, prime, Disney+, YouTube etc.

To watch any live channel - bbc, sky sport, paramount etc you need a license.

You also cannot record live tv and play it back. Watching ITV and Sky channels you need a licence for. See FAQs here: www.tvlicensing.co.uk/faqs/FAQ104

You can’t watch any “live TV” on broadcast channels. That means prerecorded programmes like Coronation Street, not just live sports matches. No ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 as well as BBC. You can watch ITV, Channel 4 and 5 from their catch-up services. You can’t watch BBC at all, even in catch-up/ iPlayer.

You can watch whatever you want, just don't let them catch you. I have t had one for years still watch bbc iPlayer etc

Newusernameaug · 09/03/2023 15:40

I stopped my tv licence about 8 yrs ago, never had an issue.
they send all sorts of threatening and warning scare mongering letters, just ignore them!

swallowedAfly · 09/03/2023 15:41

Just take the arial connection out of the back of your tv and don't use iplayer and you're fine.

I haven't had a tv license for years.

Llamagrass · 09/03/2023 15:41

You can't watch any live TV, all the players where you can watch stuff on demand (apart from iplayer) is fine.

swallowedAfly · 09/03/2023 15:43

Oh and they email you every now and then (might be 2 yearly but not sure) to make you re-confirm that you don't watch any live tv or iplayer and you just do an online declaration.

I have netflix and prime and never miss live tv.

AndTheSurveySays · 09/03/2023 15:43

Just watch whatever you want. The BBC has no way of knowing that you're viewing without a licence. Nothing bad will happen.

They only do this if you’ve contacted them, which you have no obligation to tell them you don’t need a license.

Haven’t watched live tv for several years. The block upgraded the aerials and all dishes had to come down for scaffolding. Cancelled sky and never ungraded the aerial wall thing.

First year was really disappointed no one came on the date licensing people threatened to come round. 😂

So I shouldn't watch the news? Or Sky? Sorry if Im being a tad thick.

You can watch anything really.

Every now and then I get a letter or email, even had a visit once from a pretend scary looking man who tried telling me they can scan the signal 🤣🤣🤣, never had anything happen

I don't watch live TV anymore as it happens so could have let the guy in. But I didn't want to.

No, you can’t watch the news, for sure.

Well, you're not SUPPOSED to watch it no.....

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 09/03/2023 17:31

Tv licence isn't just bbc channels!

you can't watch any live tv on any channel. Streaming services are fine, but if you have sky you need a tv licence to watch anything live

Llamagrass · 09/03/2023 17:32

If you're watching sky channels and watching the news live you need one, you could watch the news when it's up on itv and c4 player afterwards when they put them up without, but anything live, you need it for.

Florenz · 09/03/2023 17:34

Everyone should cancel their TV licence and refuse to let the inspectors into your home.

😉

And its shouldn't watch live TV, not can't. The ability to watch live TV is still there if everything's still connected.

I do hate it when one of the kids accidentally puts the TV on the free view channel.

neilyoungismyhero · 09/03/2023 18:21

Okay thank you all.
I was a bit naive, I should have done my research first.
