So today I (stupidly) learnt that I'm not actually a Civil Servant - I'm technically a Public Servant. Our organisation is a government managed service.

I (wrongly) assumed that I'm a Civil Servant because I'm part of the Alpha pension, our organisation is funded through BEIS and I can apply for internal civil service jobs (and applied for my role on the Civil Service jobsite). I literally never considered I was anything other than that - as if I'm honest i've never heard of a public servant before - perhaps I'm ignorant.

When my child was born last year I recorded my job as a Civil Servant on their birth certificate - but apparently that is incorrect.

Do I need to change this? Will there be repercussions if I don't? (is it fraud etc?!)

I also now need to change my car insurance/home insurance etc - though never saw public servant on those!

You don't need to change anything or worry.

Its fine. My FIL has never worked a day in his life, he listed himself as Window Cleaner on our marriage certificate, where the hell he dreamed that up from I have no idea. Its never been an issue though.

You are massively overthinking this. Don’t worry.

I am, I know. I'm a serial overthinker and panic-er. I usually need someone (in this case a bunch of MN strangers) to pull me back into rational thinking.

Aha - I would of put my actual job title but its 8 words long so thought i was being smart referring to my self as what i (wrongly) thought i was!

The only thing I can really think of this being used for is people researching their ancestry in years to come. And if even you didn’t realise you aren’t a civil servant then I’d say it paints a fairly reflective picture for those purposes!

Love the window cleaning FIL!

I tend to assume that when I'm asked to confirm my "profession " on generic forms like this, it's fine to give a high level/generic response. Eg government worker would also have been fine in your case I'm sure.
