Urgent but basic question about British Airways flights/hand luggage

Posting here for traffic - urgent responses from frequent flyers needed!

I am flying shorthaul with BA this afternoon, and have checked in for my flight - hand baggage only. I never fly with hand baggage only so had completely forgotten the whole toiletries thing. I have loads in my luggage, and will need to check in a bag. Because I've already checked in online, I can't change this on the booking, BA aren't answering the phone. Will they definitely let me pay extra to put a bag in the hold at the airport? Thanks in advance.

Not if your ticket allowed you a bag free of charge initially. When you get there they still ask how many are you checking in. If your ticket allowed one you can still check one free of charge.

I recently had two bags that were included as premium economy and 1checked in online. Wn I

You can buy toiletries after security and take on the plane.
( and buy at your destination? )

Sorry can't answer that, but perhaps plan for at worst buying what you need airside and leaving it at your destination if it's over the 100ml limit.

Ignore end part. There was a blip/Samsung issue

I'd probably plan for buying what you need airside and leaving it at your destination if necessary.

I would put what you can in the clear bag I think it’s 10x 100 ml and then do as @tanstaafl says. If you’re flying short haul there must be shops at your destination as well. Less anxiety that way for me at least.

Decant into 100ml bottles. You can pick them up at home bargains or Bodycare. Buy the rest in boots after security.

I’ve checked and paid for extra bags at the airport after checking in online before, sure it’ll be fine. Doubt it’ll be worth it though unless your liquids are all expensive perfumes that you can’t be without. Can’t you just buy whatever won’t fit in your plastic bag allowance there?

womanwithbooks · 08/03/2023 09:23

It's a work trip so the cost of checking in a bag isn't a problem, my only question is: will they definitely let me? I don't want to set off for the airport if there's a risk this won't happen and I'll have to dump the toiletries at the airport.

They are normally quite good at helping but I would limit what you are taking to travel size and buy anything else airside. Or try to get there early and if you have your car drop anything back?

Yes they will definitely let you check in a bag regardless of what you have said at check-in.

But I would repack and take out the stuff I don't need. I routinely travel with hand luggage only and don't need loads of toiletries (and remember a lot of male-up doesn't count as it's not liquid or paste).

Better to travel with fewer toiletries than wait for hours for your bag to come off at the other end.

Which airport are you flying from? At Heathrow there are machines on the far right which allow unlimited liquids. The new machines scan differently? No idea how it works.

KenAdams · 08/03/2023 12:10

Yes they will let you. If its a full flight they actually ask you to do so.

But I thought we still had to take the bag through security. They wanted hand luggage checked in when we traveled at Christmas but just tagged the case and it was then taken off us at the gate.

"Yes they will let you. If its a full flight they actually ask you to do so."

That's at the gate. Not at check in

Madcatwoman68 · 08/03/2023 12:35

Go onto ba.com.
There is a search bar where you can search FAQs.

Can you go into manage my booking and try to add a bag?

Countmeout · 08/03/2023 12:37

And it was a pain waiting for it coming off at the other end .
