Stray cat that likes to visit, now he is hurt

A stray cat came to visit my home a number of years ago. I fed him. He came back again and again. Talking to two other neighbours, he likes to visit them too. He is definitely a stray. Nobody really owns him. I suspect he came from an old man's home from up the road and he wasn't fed or minded.

He was hurt last year and I was going to make plans to take him to the vet but then he disappeared for a few days and I couldn't take him to the vet.

Anyways, he is hurt again. He has a big fat open wound on his head. I want to take him to the vet. To be honest, I want to put him to sleep. I don't mind covering the costs. Would a vet put him to sleep or will it be other for him. His hunger is huge. I took pictures and I was thinking about emailing the vet with pictures and get his opinion. The only problem is that I don't drive. I can borrow a cat transporter cage. But then organising a lift and then an appointment and then the cat itself, might be an issue.

If you do not want to care for this cat yourself, would you please contact your local Rescue. If there is someone available to foster the cat, they will and will see that he is given the care he needs and rehomed.

I'm not sure why you want to put this poor cat to sleep, when all he needs is medical attention and rehoming.

PaniniHead · 07/03/2023 21:19

Maybe try Scan Angels? There may be one local who could help with transport?
You could also ring 03001234999 to get an RSPCA voucher to help with vet costs

Why would you want him put to sleep? The poor thing just needs a comfortable home (after being patched up, of course).

Why do you want to have him PTS? It sounds like you have enjoyed his company, but now he needs some veterinary care, you just want to rinse your hands of him and have him disposed of.
Approach a rescue, and let this poor mog have the chance to find a proper home.

I agree with first poster @SilentHedges comment .
and @PaniniHead comment too,

Why would you want to put down a cat when there are rescue centres? I’m not sure any vet would put down a otherwise healthy cat anyway! Could you call a local rescue centre for advice?

ZeldaB · 07/03/2023 21:25

You’re feeding a stray and want to help him, so why on earth are you talking about killing him?

  1. tell a cat charity that he is there and they will trap, treat and hopefully arrange his adoption, or
  2. pay for his treatment then adopt him, or
  3. pay for his treatment then release him back to the wild.

Call the RSPCA . Cat info half way down page www.rspca.org.uk/utilities/contactus/reportcruelty
Contact a local vet and explain it is an injured stray. They will advise.
Contact the PDSA www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/looking-after-your-pet/all-pets/stray-pets-what-to-do
Call Cats Protection www.cats.org.uk/help-and-advice/lost-found-and-feral-cats/found-a-cat

Lots of options and a professional will decide treatment or pts after assessment. It’s not your decision to make. Just help the poor cat to get some help for its injuries.

Rescue centre!

At the very least, take him to the vet (they will have links with rescues). If you are worried about money, just say you found him.

Please don’t leave him like this.

Want2beme · 07/03/2023 21:29

Contact a rescue and ask them to help you catch him. A vet will not and should not PTS at your request! Cats who are left to their own devices have ailments and wounds. He might be an intact Tom that needs castrating. This will calm him down and save him from a lot of harm from other intact Toms.
