How do I change the parking outside my house?

Hi everyone, any advice or tips on this problem?

Our house is right on the high street in a small village.

At our end of the high street most of the houses are quite large and they all have private driveways, except an couple like ours - which has a front door opening up directly onto the pavement / fairly busy road. Double yellow lines are painted on both sides so we can’t park anywhere outside - we have to park five / ten minutes away on another road and cart shopping / buggies back and forth.

Just a little further down the high street all the houses are small like ours, with front doors opening directly onto the pavement / road, like ours. At that end of the high street car parking spaces are marked out at intervals (interspersed with double yellow lines) so residents can park their cars outside these houses.

How (if at all) could DH and I persuade the council to implement something similar up our end of the road so we have closer parking spaces?

Appreciate this might be a long and futile campaign to try and change anything! But interested to understand if it’s possible and how to go about it. Have zero experience of anything like this but I know someone on mumsnet will!

I would imagine the best place to start would be with your local councillor or your parish council if you have one and see if they will back your proposal.

Your local councillor would probably be the best person to contact first. They might be able to tell you why the parking situation is different further down the road - is that section of road near a junction, or narrower than the section that alternates parking spaces and double yellow lines. In both cases, parked car could block the road hence the DYLs. If they don’t know , they can advise who to ask in the council.

Is the section with marked out spaces permit parking for residents only, or can anyone park there?

I am genuinely not trying to be goady but surely this was something that you knew about before you bought your house?
Being more practical, maybe see if your neighbours would join with you to approach the parish/town council about this. You could look into the history of the street, too, to see if you can find the reason for the double yellows being put in in the first place and whether that is still valid.
Even with marked, residents only bays you would probably still have difficulty parking outside your house without the aid of a traffic warden.

Is there a difference in the width of the road, or how busy it is compared to the section of road that has some spaces marked out? Or on a bend or similar?
