Points on your license

Following a discussion we were having at work today, I was wondering how many people on here have points on their license and what they got them for? I currently have no points on my license and have never had any but I was in a minority at work. Mostly it seemed people have them for speeding, is that pretty much all you get them for these days or do other things carry points too?

Having no insurance will get you 6 points and a fine (I’m not speaking from experience 😆)

Inkypot · 06/03/2023 21:36

No points on mine or any of tiny family's 🤷‍♀️
I agree it can feel like we're in the minority though. People seem way too lax on speeding in this country unfortunately. Every day the news is filled with terrible road accidents and yet phrases like "car left the road", "car lost control" etc are used to avoid saying "driver drove outwith legal speed limit".
Instead we have people claiming speed cameras are money making exercises rather than taking some responsibility for their actions behind a wheel.

Offences which carry penalty points

Pedallleur · 06/03/2023 21:38

3 points on mine. Over the 30mph limit. My fault. Using a phone will get you 6 points and a 200 pound fine. Think you can find a list of traffic offences/penalties via the internet.

I've only ever had points for speeding (and not for about 15 years now!), and I don't think I know anyone who has had points for anything else.

Badbudgeter · 06/03/2023 21:50

None on my licence. I know a lot of people who were caught out during the duelling of the A9. Long stretches went from 60/70 to 40 and stayed that way for ages. I think it’s easy to be a bit heavy footed when you are used to the road being faster especially at odd times when the road is quiet. I used to set car to 40 but I was surprised at the number of people who would zoom past.

Zero points, but disqualifications BlushBlushBlush

I've had 3 points (speeding) some years ago.
I know someone who's had about 150 over the years - all speeding. Seems incapable of understanding the rules of the road 😡

Shade17 · 06/03/2023 21:59

Had a few over the years for speeding but completely clean at present. Had a few fines in other countries as well.

LittleRebelGirl · 06/03/2023 22:05

I have no points. Nor does DP (to my knowledge!).
I got to 9 points at one point (over 15 years ago) Two lots of 3 for speeding and one for supposed mobile use (I wasn't, but didn't have the fight in me aged 22 that I do at 38!). All within about 18 months of each other. I've never had points since.
My dp was disqualified long before I met him (early 20's) for driving with no insurance. He forgot to renew. Don't think he has ever had any points.

I have only ever had 3 points at a time, and I think twice:

The first time I was leaving Glastonbury festival with an almost stationary line of traffic. Someone walked up ahead to see what was happening and discovered that as the exit road forked left & right that the right hand route was blocked.
I wanted to go right, but took the advice to go left - then once out of the traffic turned right to a clear road all of the way home - which left me cruising along happily until the speed camera near hone flashed

Next was a trip to wales for a surprise birthday party, organised by an old friends partner. He confirmed that I could use the spare room but obviously couldn’t turn up the night before
Being that it was wales and they are known for speed cameras I drove extra carefully until getting to the motorway services I was to stay at, then headed into town and then failed to slow when the dual carriageway became 40 - getting flashed

With many years between them all I was last caught speeding with the option of an awareness course, so took no points - and am still on no points

bhiffandcip · 06/03/2023 22:41

No points and never had any.

Murraydeservedit · 06/03/2023 22:42

I’ve been driving for 24 years now and never a point or any fines.

bhiffandcip · 06/03/2023 22:43

Oh I've been driving just over 35 years

Wow, that's one hell of a list 😳 I am left wondering what exactly would constitute "furious driving"

I’m pretty sure I’ve had a good go at that 😂
