Not wearing helmets

Funnybunny12 · 06/03/2023 16:30

Currently skiing and have noticed many people not wearing a helmet just a normal hat. I just can’t see why anyone would ski with out one. Just seems so silly or dangerous. My insurance also states I have to wear a helmet to be covered.

People are stupid and think nothing bad will happen to them, Like cyclists. Too vain, worry what they look like.

It's not your concern, let's hope they don't regret their decision.

PartyWhere · 06/03/2023 16:53

People go noticeably faster now that they all wear helmets. Seemingly in the belief they won't get injured if they fall. I'm not sure it's a good thing tbh. For kids definitely, but for adults...I'd rather they took more care and went more slowly than wear a helmet and speed down as fast as they can.

Ostryga · 06/03/2023 17:24

This winds me up a lot, especially when it’s children and I have and will call out idiot parents on the ski slope (to multiple degrees of success).

It’s like skiing without skis. It should be just as important a piece of kit.

Helmets don’t have an impact on speed I don’t think, depends how competent you are. There’s only so fast you can go if you don’t know what you’re doing without falling over.

that's exactly the problem. They go far faster than they are competent to do because they're wearing a helmet and aren't so worried about falling over.

Where are you? Whenever we ski, it's rare to see anyone without a helmet!

This. The only people I saw without were instructors.

lljkk · 06/03/2023 18:53

having learnt to ski, ski'd on/off for 25 years without helmet I am not sure I could get used to one.

lljkk · 06/03/2023 18:53

ps: you have snow?! So little in Europe.

They absolutely do.

A friend of mine, who is an academic in sports science, wrote their PhD thesis on the correlation between the increased use of safety equipment and its effect on personal risk analysis and increased injury in grassroots / amateur sports some ten years ago.

DevantMaJardin · 06/03/2023 19:00

I think it's a bit silly and hysterical to "call out" other people over whether they wear one or not. It's a personal choice. Honestly wear one if you want but this hand-wringing smacks of "I have to follow a rule so I must impose it on everyone else".

Lots of evidence that mandatory cycle helmets rules doesn't decrease injuries and fatalities. Risk and effect on behaviour is very complex.

Absolutely, yes.

This, it's all so superior.

Ostryga · 06/03/2023 19:52

Yes protecting your child’s brain with a helmet is extremely superior.

I must be the queen of England from how superior I am for not letting my child ski without a helmet. Listen to yourself!

Sleepysailor · 06/03/2023 20:25

What is it with people thinking they can act like a helmet police?
Wear it if you like, let the others make their own decisions.
Have you ever tried teaching anyone skiing in one? I can tell you it very much limits what you see an hear. And you're responsible for a group of small children too. There is a reason why ski instructors don't wear one!

There’s evidence too that motorists take less care around cyclists with all the bells and whistles safety gear.

I’m sure they don’t intentionally think “oh he’s got a hat on he’ll be ok if I get too close and clip him with a wing mirror”, but clearly on some subconscious level that is what’s happening.

What are you on about? A proper ski helmet doesn’t prevent anything except you bashing your head enough to hurt yourself.

I started skiing as soon as I could walk. All my instructors had helmets on once we got off blue. Also when you’re instructing you’re not pacing down a black run, you’re watching your students progress.

Stop trying to make it out like it’s not cool to wear a helmet. It is. And parents who don’t put their kids in one deserved to be policed and ridiculed.

As do adults on slopes who think they’re too good for safety. Get over yourself!

Sleepysailor · 06/03/2023 21:11

My own life, my choice! Ridiculous health and safety rules are killing this country. And the people who think they can police them, are the worst.
Be sensible on the slopes and make your own risk assessment. It's not slalom giant!

Funnybunny12 · 07/03/2023 19:40

where I am there is definitely a lot of young people with out helmets lots of young girls in those very fashionable very fitted all in one outfits with fur hood or matching hat and no helmet. Also saw a big group who were with an instructor having early on lessons I think as all snow plowing on a green following him. Only one girl wearing a helmet the rest had hats or ear cover things on.

been Skiing for many years and when I started years and years ago helmets weren’t really a thing unless you where a child. As I got older the 10 adults in our yearly ski group all got helmets their skiing speed didn’t increase. The helmet actually saved someone from a nasty head injury after someone skied into her and she bashed her head in a stone/ rock big dent in the helmet and very mild concussion could have been far worse.

There is evidence that helmets actually increase the risk of serious injury.

It shows if you get into an accident it protects against injury, but that helmet wearers are more likely to get into an accident.

as already discussed. It’s not the helmet that increase the risk of injury, but that the wearer takes more risk.
