Any garden bird experts about?

We live on a housing estate. Our kitchen door to the garden is half glazed. About 5 metres away is an out building with glazed patio doors but you can’t see in because of full length curtains.

About a week ago we noticed a blue tit behaving oddly. It flies at the kitchen door, or sits on the handle and taps with its beak or sits on the sill and taps the glass.

My first thought it was finding insects because we have a dog and the back door is always covered in mud. However once its done tapping on the kitchen door it flies to the out building and does the same. No mud there.

What’s it reason?

Is it seeing its own reflection?

LittleBlueBrioTrain · 06/03/2023 09:08

Probably a territorial male having a fight with his own reflection

ZeroFuchsGiven · 06/03/2023 09:08

He is attacking his reflection thinking it is another male in his territory.

It’ll stop once he gets laid

Blue Tits in particular are known for this. We had one at the bathroom window for ages.

I have the same chaffinch visited for the last 4 years, the kids hate him, I love him! he bangs on the bedroom windows constantly from sunrise, if not at the windows hes on the car wing mirrors, he is currently upstairs now kicking the shit out of Ds's bedroom window Grin

Thank you all. Reflection would make sense. Our kitchen is a dark hole and would definitely have a mirror effect.

So our blue tit is a hormonal male. I feel I want to give him suitable name now. How about Tyson the Tit? He’s tapping like crazy right now..

He’s fighting himself

Brahumbug · 06/03/2023 09:21

We have long tailed tits doing the same thing, which is odd considering how sociable they seem to be normally.
