Thinking of moving to Oxton The Wirral but don't know the area well. What's it like?

Nicer part of the Wirral.

Easy to get into Liverpool from there.

Bloody amazing. West end Glasgow feel, Victorian semis and terraces and independent food and wine shops, plus a Michelin star restaurant in the centre.

close access to fairly sketchy bits though which is why my husband wouldn’t consider it - I’d live there in a heartbeat ❤️❤️

If you have off road parking then its great! Lovely cafes, restaurants and a couple of decent pubs. Close to Liverpool, good schools (private and council) and large parks (The Arno and Birkenhead park) for playgrounds and dog walking/exercise. Several supermarkets close by.
Any questions, I'm happy to help.

Thanks for replies. Oxton village looks lovely. But the area around woodchurch road seems not so nice. How bad is it there?

Woodchurch Road (no's 400 upwards) at the top end down to the motorway is probably better than the other end towards the town centre. Bigger houses etc but it's a main route to the hospital and can be noisy. The roads set back from Woodchurch Road are lovely in Prenton towards Higher Bebington.

@Bananajam really appreciate your local knowledge. So the area around victoria mount and rose mount look very nice. Are they far enough away from the not so nice areas? Thank you

The village is gorgeous I used to live there. Be aware though in 5 mins in the car you're in the darkest depths of Birkenhead 😂

Its a mishmash of nice and not so nice but I'm guessing that's the case everywhere. There are a range of decent schools, primary and secondary. There's plenty of nightlife! Oxton village is a funny mix because its relatively close to Birkenhead, there's a drug rehab centre and a GP surgery that has patients from there but also we have million plus priced properties and plenty in between, flats, houses and mansions!
Nisha Katona lived in the village for years, she moved in 2019 i think as she wanted more land as she has horses. So we have some beautiful properties alongside some social housing. There can be occasional issues with heavy drinking and antisocial behaviour over the weekends

I love it here, I can go for brunch within a five minute walk, have several options for a drink or evening meal. An amazing deli, some niche shops and a newsagents/post office. We have the secret gardens open day with lots of fun for everyone, the Christmas lights switch on and there is a real sense of community.
There is a huge lack of parking, we have had a break in and a window was broken and my car wing mirror was knocked off too in the 10 years we've lived here but there is a neighbourhood watch scheme and we have fully invested local councillors who listen and react quickly to deal with issues they can resolve.

Hi Citynbeach
I'm from the Wirral, Heswall is my home town, but I spent a fair part of my teenage years in Oxton and like most Wirral-squirrels I know the peninsula like the back of my hand.
Honestly? Oxton had a pretty bad reputation back in the late eighties / early nineties. As per Liverpool, many of the old Victorian villas had been split up into bedsits. It really was DSS land with a very bad underbelly, a lot of drug- dealing and a real Liverpool/ Woodchurch estate criminal overspill going on. I had an old boyfriend who lived there back in the day, and all kinds of crazy s* was going on - on his street. (Ian Astbury from The Cult lived up the road from him back then) But that said it always had a respectable middle class element too, my old art teacher also lived there with his family, and there were a few million pound villas, esp on Noctorum Hill, even then.

I go back now and I have to rub my eyes at times as its downright chi-chi these days, with all kinds of cake and coffee shops that you'd find in Didsbury or Dulwich. Most of the houses have been restored and turned back to single family dwellings or into better class one to two bed flats - and prices have gone through the roof. But that said it's still cheaper than the ritzier neighbourhoods of Liverpool or Manchester.

In terms of "the pull factor" - education is a big one. Wirral held on to its state grammar schools in the 1976 shakeup (I went to West Kirby) and that has always been a big attraction for young families. Plus the transport links - it has easy access to Manchester and Chester as well as Liverpool. However as others have pointed out - you are not a million miles away from the mean streets of north-end Birkenhead and the "Woody" (the Woodchurch estate - do NOT leave your car parked here under ANY circumstances, the Asda car park is the only safe spot for miles.)
But you have easy access to the many practical and decent shops in Birkenhead, including a decent Waterstones bookshop and a brilliant TK Maxx, and all kinds of local facilities and the properties are GORGEOUS. Also the countryside on the Wirral is really breathtaking, the sunsets over the River Dee will kill you. I appreciate it now as I live in west London and only go back to see my mum. We didn't give it a second thought growing up - (Royden Park was OUR playground as teenagers.)

If you want safety, low crime and middle class predictability - head for West Wirral; Heswall West Kirby, and Neston, but you will have to pay through the nose for it these days as prices have gone bonkers. But Oxton still has an edge to it - bigger, showier houses, and the facilities and transport links are way better

Wirral is still one of the UK's best kept secrets - long may it stay this way!

Hope this helps
C

I agree with lots of what Cath says. Except for the bit about Woodchurch. I park my car there every week and it's absolutely fine. Woodchurch isn't what it once was. I have friends who live there and are very happy.

Oxton village is lovely, big old houses, lovely villagey feel and great independent bars and shops.

Be careful of the outskirts of Oxton though, as they could be more Birkenhead-y which might not be what you're looking for.

In general the Wirral is lovely. It has everything - close to big cities, it has old villages, countryside, beaches and good schools x

Oxton a brilliant and I’d love to live there, it’s very similar to parts of Glasgow west end independent shops. Nice pubs, beautiful old bay windowed villas.

My kids to go school in Oxton and I think it’s way more interesting than Heswall where I live.
