Anyone been to Valencia?

DP and I (no kids) have a trip booked week after next. Has anyone been and has recommendations for things to do, restaurants, beaches and general areas to wander? Not massive fish eaters but keen to try some of the paella!

We’ll be there 5 nights so if there’s a day trip you’d recommend (public transport, no car) that would be great too!

We’ll be there for a few days of Las Fallas and not sure what to expect!

Thanks! Smile

Yes!

Twice.

Fallas is freakin' amazing!

You'll have a great time

I hope you like fireworks 🎆
They're insane

allthelittlelights · 05/03/2023 20:48

The science museum and aquarium part are nice.

Radiatorvalves · 05/03/2023 20:53

15 yo son went in October and said it was
amazing. He mainly talked about the food. I’d love to go. A colleague has a flat there and clearly loves it. Enjoy!

Fabulous city. The metro is cheap and easy to use. Loads to see and do in the city, the cathedral, the riverbed walk, the science museum and its architecture. Loads of gorgeous places to eat and drink.
Take a day trip to alberfura too

Such a great city. Wander around the river bed, visit the old port town, buy delicious things at the huge market. Very envious!

Littlepaws18 · 05/03/2023 20:59

Watch travel man on channel 4, excellent episode about Valencia- I'm desperate to go after seeing it!

ChillinwiththeVillains · 05/03/2023 21:02

Are you there for Las Fallas? Or the week before? It’s a bit like Lewes in terms of each village making a satirical papier-mâché character and parading it on a float. Real party atmosphere. Museum fabulous and the path along the old rvicerbwd is lovely. Also visit the fish market and the tiger nut milk bars. Just a beautiful place and fab timing for the weather too.

The Riverbed is great :-) we have been but only on a day trip from the coast - it’s a nice city though, I’m sure you will enjoy it! If you are worried about having enough to do, maybe check out where the train goes to as the trains are certainly easy to navigate from my experience.

Meredusoleil · 05/03/2023 21:13

Definitely check out the beach. Its a short bus ride away. Also, possibly a day trip to Montserrat if you fancy seeing the monastery there?

CornedBeef451 · 05/03/2023 21:19

We stayed in Port Saplaya and it's a lovely place for a wander.

It's a marina with lots of boats and apartments and a strip of lovely restaurants just across from the beach.

We struggled a bit with public transport as it seemed to be 2 buses to get to the town centre so it was much easier to get a taxi.

There's a massive supermarket by the taxi rank where they sell legs of fancy ham and we were delighted to find they come in a special ham bag, highlight of the holiday.

Valencia is one of my top City breaks. The food is utterly amazing. There was no one meal which was not good. Often it was divine and beautifully done. Reasonably priced and great atmosphere. The Central Market is a riot of colour and feast for the senses.

We rented an electric bike to whizz around the river bed park. Many people on motorised scooters. It is very easy to get around.

Enjoy.

Pointblank2 · 05/03/2023 21:47

It’s my favourite spanish city, hire bikes and see twice as much, the cycle lanes are everywhere. Can go up and down the coast, and to the top of the park, about 10km. The park is awesome especially early evening. The beach is fab, better sand than many resorts.
one restaurant that stood out was Restaurante Asador Argentino Gordon 10, the steaks were gorgeous and the Gordon’s Gold beer delicious but very strong. I can’t remember the names of other places but some needed google translate as there were no English menus

Oooo following! DP and I are there week after next too for 4 nights!

Mumdiva99 · 05/03/2023 22:17

On the strength of a recommendation from mumsnet we are going there for our summer holiday. So please come back @Paellasun and tell me what you thought and any recommendations.

TheVanguardSix · 05/03/2023 22:26

We love it so much we’re considering moving there. There an old riverbed (Turin) transformed into a park that snakes through the city. You can rent bikes and cycle the park. Valencia is apparently the second most cycle friendly city in Europe. Brilliant paths. We walked the length of the Turia gardens, hardly used public transportation but it was fabulous when we did use it. Go to the mercato colon for morning coffee/orxata and pastry.

TheVanguardSix · 05/03/2023 22:50

Turia not Turin.

TokyoSushi · 05/03/2023 22:57

I went there on a work trip, oh it's so beautiful, I LOVED it!! We went on an organised city walking tour, lovely, and really interesting, would recommend, fab place!

maddy68 · 05/03/2023 23:04

Paella is eaten by the locals at lunch. Don't eat at night it's different and dont eat it on a Monday. The museum /sea place is incredible allow plenty of time for that
