Doorstep sellers

I've just had a young lad knock on my door selling dusters, oven mits etc. he said he's just looking to make some money for accommodation tonight. Didn't mention a charity or company or anything.
I could hear other lads at neighbours houses doing the same thing.
I gave him a tenner because I have previously worked with a homeless charity and didn't want him to have no where to go tonight. I will add I don't usually give money to people knocking at my door, which happens a lot round my area.
Now, on reflection, I'm wondering if it's some sort of scam? Will they be back for more money? It's not even being scammed out of a tenner because I just offered it but I don't want them coming back for more or thinking I have cash in the house because I usually don't. Am I overthinking?

It's a well known scam.

Check your gate, garden fence, pavement outside your house — used to be marked with chalk to show householder was a soft touch.
You could put up a No Cold Callers sign.

What's the scam? Making a few quid selling dodgy stuff? Or something more sinister?
