Fitted kitchens

I hate having a fitted kitchen. I have lovely kitchen furniture - a 30s cupboard with integral chopping board, some 20s small cupboards and some even earlier (19th C) - all family heirlooms, which can't also fit into fitted kitchens so are in storage, or in the house elsewhere.

We are slowly preparing to move, and I look at least weekly at what's around.

Everything has fitted bloody kitchens, except 'projects' which dh and I couldn't take on for lack of health and dosh.

Does everyone in the world want a fitted kitchen? Why?

Are we really the last couple of a dead breed?!

Having a fitted kitchen maximises storage space. I do think there is a move away from them though, particularly in larger houses or if you are lucky enough to have a larder.

I don't really like them, especially ones that look like operating theatres, someone on another thread mentioned the operating theatre look and I thought, that is just what they look like.

Ours is fitted but not overly so, we still have a freestanding cooker and some shelves and non integrated white goods.

Our current home has a fitted kitchen which was made by the previous owner specially. It's so full of cupboard there's barely room for anything else. At first it looked so great - and everyone gasps about how lovely it is when they first come in - but what we didn't notice was that there are NO drawers!

There we were with my lovely kitchen cupboards with drawers galore but nowhere to put them! The first month I had to put all the utensils and cutlery etc in plastic basket things.
