Breakdown cover - which company?

Newtrix · 02/03/2023 16:49

We've always had breakdown cover included with our car but this year we've had the service and MOT done independently so need to organise breakdown cover. RAC seem to have a half price deal on but Greenflag still seems cheaper.

Would you recommend whichever company you use?

Thank you!

I use Green Flag, would recommend.

Redglitter · 02/03/2023 16:50

I'm with Greenflag. Have only had to call them out once (thankfully) and despite being at my workplace they were out in 45 mins.

I can recommend Smart rescue. I had a battery problem recently and called them out three times in one week. Each time I was at home, it wasn’t a priority and they were here within 40 minutes. I live rurally too! I was very impressed.

@PercyPhelps I've googled Smart Rescue and only Start Rescue comes up. Is that correct or are Google playing silly b*ggers?

I'm Green Flag too.

Had to call them twice. First time they were there within 20 minutes. The second time within 40 minutes.
But the second time I was at home with an oil leak (caused by garage). They took the car into the garage and told them not to be so silly and go and look when the garage said it was probably "residue oil".
Tbf to the garage once they'd realised their mistake they grovelled... I think they're still grovelling nearly 3 years later!

The drivers have both been really polite, helpful and explained everything fully to me. They were also lovely to ds who in the first instant was a very excited toddler who wanted to help, and in the second instant an awkward teen who needed a lift into town-which they did as they took the car in.

Oops yes Startrescue. Sorry!

Isleoftights · 02/03/2023 20:35

Green Flag. Called them at 6 am in the wilds of Caithness, north Scotland, they were there within 45 minutes. AA - rip off merchants - will give you a quote, then triple it when it comes to renewal.

Floralnomad · 02/03/2023 20:39

We’ve been with the AA for years , ring up every year to get the price reduced to what it was the previous year give or take a £ on family membership . Called them loads over the years as I used to have a classic Herald convertible , which lots of breakdown companies wouldn’t cover due to him being extremely old . The only time I’ve had an issue was last June when I needed towing in my sisters car and they outsourced the tow (south London) and I emailed the feedback and they sent me a £50 cheque .

Been with RAC nearly 10 years. I was going to leave when mentioned green flag and they matched their prices.
I've called them out multiple times. Been fab! Come out within the hour and got my car sorted.

We changed from the RAC (after 20 years) to Start Rescue. They were much cheaper than all the better known companies (RAC/AA/Greenflag). We broke down on a bank holiday Monday in a motorway services. I thought it would take hours for them to come, but they came within half an hour. We had a horse trailer (empty) on the back so they had to call for a bigger recovery truck. That too came within half an hour. Then they took us 150 miles home without any stress whatsoever. I was really impressed with them.

crackofdoom · 02/03/2023 20:57

Green Flag. I have heard many, many horror stories about RAC.
I used to have independent breakdown cover through my insurance, in the days when I used to break down constantly, and everyone who recovered me said that Green Flag were the best of the big 3.

kljk78 · 02/03/2023 20:59

Does your bank offer it? Nationwide do the full AA shebang, annual travel insurance for the family and mobile insurance for £13 a month.

Mum2jenny · 02/03/2023 21:02

Never had any issues with RAC and I’ve been with them for many years. My policy covers me in any vehicle, irrespective if I’m the driver or a passenger
