Birthday present for DS11

I’m completely at a loss for DS’s birthday. He’d like a VR headset, but I don’t have £400 spare! He’s not into lego, or toys really. He has a laptop and a ps4 and a switch but hasn’t mentioned any games except Zelda, which isn’t out yet. He’s just joined a football team, and likes coding on his laptop: no other hobbies really except reading. My mum is getting him headphones to listen to music and à roblox card, my sister is getting him some books by an author he likes. I’m all out of ideas. Does anyone have any inspiration?

Can you get a second hand VR set?
trendy trainers?

rainyalan · 02/03/2023 07:11

I'm the same! Has all the technology he needs. We were thinking maybe an Apple Watch, my old one that is.

Is there some sort of experience he would like? Football match tickets or a video games conference/festival?

When is the game released? If its in the next few months, he might be excited for a voucher for it.

Trainers, football kit, clothes.

My ds has just turned 13- we got him- Nike hi-tops, hoody, book on Japanese myths and legends, Japanese large wall hanging, bubble tea kit. He also got stationary stuff from his dad (new sketch pad, markers etc).

He likes everything Japanese inspired as he adores Pokémon, but I refused to buy him more Pokémon cards this time!

Recent big birthday or Christmas presents for my tween DS include a bike, football table and a trip to Alton Towers.

Football clothes - kit, shinpads, boots etc.

If he supports a big team - kit or merchandise for them. Or stadium tour.

You can get cheaper VR headsets than that!

AnneButNotHathaway · 03/03/2023 07:10

A second hand VR set definitey sounds like a solution, or you can look for cheaper options maybe?

Could be something related to artists or teams he likes: clothes or accessories from their official stores. You can design something on your own as well, like a calendar with their pictures or a collage of their photos and autographs.

If he likes reading, maybe look into book club subscriptions? Something like this www.penguin.co.uk/articles/childrens-article/best-book-subscription-boxes-childrens

Equimum · 03/03/2023 07:15

What about theatre tickets or tickets to a football match?

Howmanysleepsnow · 03/03/2023 07:21

Can anyone link to a cheaper VR headset? Or somewhere safe to buy second hand. EBay worries me- what if it doesn’t work?
bubble tea and a book subscription are good ideas for smaller gifts too, thank you!
football kit would be good but he got that for Christmas 🙈

How about a just eat voucher or similar he could choose his own take out. They like Nandos too. Amazon voucher he could choose something he likes. Cinema voucher, he could take a friend. Obviously not a big present but ideas.

Inkypinkee · 03/03/2023 07:27

Hey, so VR headsets you need a pc or console for them work with, and others are stand alone. There is no headset that works with switch.

there is a headset that works with PlayStation.

if you need stand alone get an oculus quest.

If you have a good PC you can get cheaper.

Inkypinkee · 03/03/2023 07:28

Also you can get places to play on a vr headset like Park Playground, so could get tickets. But I think they are all 12+

Howmanysleepsnow · 03/03/2023 07:29

No PC, just a laptop. I’m guessing that means stand-alone or PlayStation?

Oh I saw you have ps4, you can get a vr headset for this console and prob one second hand.

Inkypinkee · 03/03/2023 07:35

Also they just brought out the new psvr 2, that works with PlayStation 5, so people should be selling their psvr 1 now

Inkypinkee · 03/03/2023 07:38

I have always had a good experience buying from CEX you would need headset, two move controllers and a camera.

feelingrubbish2023 · 03/03/2023 07:45

Can you pre order Zelda and print something out? I've done that for ds a few times now especially when games are £60. He likes to get the games as soon as they come out, so every year he gets a pre order for fifa as part of his birthday present, as he wouldn't want to wait for Xmas and there is no way I'd be buying something that cost that much if it wasn't for birthday/Christmas.
