Have you been to both and which one did you prefer in terms of the result and cost?

Depends on what type of glasses that you order, if you are having custom made vari-focals, they will be more expensive. Single vision lenses even with coatings will be a lot cheaper than that. You could have private sight test at the independent and then take the prescription to a high street optician and compare OP.

Marks and Spencer optical were doing an offer in January, so I paid £80 for sight test, eye health check, and 2 x pair of glasses. Not designer ones but still very nice. I don't have a complicated prescription .

£195. Test, lenses and two frames, Boots. Frames were £ 70 each.

Mine are uncomplicated standard, but I do have them coated and the range/distance for reading/computer work is around one-metre (I know there's a cost implication having that).

174 quid for 2 pairs of simple prescription reading / computer work glasses with anti glare coating and tests last month from Specsavers. Middle aged degenerating vision not only socks but messed up my bank account.

£30 for an eye test at Specsavers including their special imaging service, £20 otherwise.

I don't have glasses yet but could use uncomplicated reading glasses so I don't need to spend £££ unlike DH who needed varifocals and spent about £700.

I've just paid £255 for two pairs of glasses at Boots, not including the eye test. That includes one step of thinning for both and one pair are prescription sunglasses with polarisation. I had the eye test done at Specsavers (£35) as their offers looked better but it's a false economy as their prices start higher and they charge more for add-ons. So their "2 for 1" actually works out more expensive than Boots' "Second pair half price". I'd also forgotten how much I hate the Specsavers hard sell so I'll be sticking with Boots in future.

Boots opticians. I think it was £65. £20 for the test and £45 for my glasses or £25 and £40 can't remember. I didn't get new sunglasses this time- they are always more expensive

Mine were a few hundred last time at Boots for one pair. Complicated prescription. The frames were cheap -bought from the children’s range. I need new glasses but can’t afford them. I think Boots did a hard sell on me. Everyone I know has had problems with Vision Express, so I avoid them. My local independent optician is too expensive

£40 eye test
£560 for lenses only, I could use an existing frame. Verifocal with a -8 and +1.25 prescribtion. I need the top of the range ones from Zeiss and as thin as they make it.
£270 for a second pair of reading glasses only as the verifocals don't work with me sitting at a computer for 7 hours.

Unknown cost for a pair of sunglasses I need in the next 1-2 months.

We started going to this particular one as the optician is very good with children and DH and I then moved over to him as well. I had a mix of independent and chain opticians over the years and in my optinion it's the people, not the shop who make a huge difference to where I go.

I know our eyes are so important, but finding it hard to get my head round £500 and that's £125 for the test and £375 for replacement lenses only (no new glasses).

£800 for varifocals top quality ultra light anti glare lenses and mid range frames. Private optician and excellent attention to detail.

I used the prescription to buy further specs from glasses direct for vastly less £££ (the varifocal range is not as impressive but now I’m used to them I won’t shell out for higher quality next time)

Independent optician. £500 for glasses. £25 for the test. I am -9.50 both eyes and need thin varifocals. I tried Asda (£50 all in) which many rate here and found the quality of the lenses awful and felt I couldn’t see properly so returned them for a refund. Had some from specsavers before which were about £200 ish but the more expensive ones from the independent opticians are definitely better- my field of vision in them is much, much better.

Private optician. about £500 for my last pair of glasses. Not varifocals but I did need them thinning as quite strong prescription.

I need particularly small frames so I can't just get the cheap ones online. When I've looked at doing so, there's limited options and would only save me about £40 tops.

Free eye test at boots (history of glaucoma in the family). I have varifocals with 'best' thin/light/anti glare lenses and frames that were about £140. All in about £420. I paid using Klarna to spread the cost across 3 instalments interest free.

London, about £340 for 2 pairs and a test in Specsavers this year. A couple of years ago I paid £400 for 1 pair of eyeglasses at Boots Opticians.

I went to John Lewis this week. I paid £470 for the eye test and two pairs of Prada glasses (for distance).

Spec savers test £35. Asda glasses, varifocal (-6.5 to +2.5), thinned, light reactive £129. My eyes are changing quickly and I can’t bear spending £600 on glasses that only last a year or so. I’d rather have a better frame choice really. Had a poor pair and bad service from boots a few years back.

£600 for a pair of glasses and a pair of prescription sunglasses. The eye test was free. I have a high prescription need and opted to get thinner lenses. It would have been much more but I'm over 60 so that got me a discount and the sunglasses were half price. The service was second to none though. I use Boots

I had my eyes tested in October and bought two pairs of glasses, one for reading and the other for distance which I only wear for watching tv and driving. Local group opticians, cost£480.
I’d no idea what brand the frames were when I was trying them on, all the racks were unbranded, turns out my reading glasses are Ted Baker and my distance are Jenson which means nothing to me.
I was surprised at the amount, the optician was telling the assistant I needed prescription polarised sunglasses as well but thankfully I told her I didn’t need them in winter or I’ve no idea how much the bill would have been.
