What's up with these frozen mushrooms?

With the vegetable shortages this week we ended up with frozen mushrooms - not much else to be had at the supermarket. Added them to some rice today and noticed an odd black tint to some of them so took them out. Now they've defrosted a bit they look positively grim 😅 what is it - soil? Hoping I cooked it all for long enough anyway as I'm currently pregnant and still ate the rice and a few that looked normal before seeing how those others turned out!

Frozen mushrooms are grim. They may as well actually be slugs.

Best case scenario dirt, worst case mould? I wouldn’t want to eat them- better go for dried mushrooms next time, way better than frozen when you can’t get fresh

I agree that frozen (or tinned) mushrooms are grim! It must be difficulty if there are shortages, though(we have a surplus of loads of things from our garden, but our son in Glasgow has just sent me an excited text about finally finding peppers!) . Could the black bits be the gills, where the spores are? It's difficult to tell because they have been chopped.
If they haven't put you off eating altogether, I think I would have something else.

Thanks, all 😂 looking back over the picture, I really haven't done the frozen mushroom market any favours. @BigglyBee I really do want to tell myself they're just the gills, having been chopped up in a very weird way, but I just found another suspicious lump loose in the pack. Bleh! Very envious of your wonderful sounding garden 😁

Isn't that just the mushroom? Or yeah maybe manure
