Dental Advice

I had a filling last Wednesday. I have only ever had one filling before many years ago so not sure of what I should be experiencing. On Friday I went back to the dentist as there were some sharp bits that needed to be polished off. The dentist agreed that this was a good idea as he good feel the sharp bits as well. However since then my tooth now aches and I can't eat on that side of my mouth at all. My ear on that side of my head also seems to hurt as well. It is not a constant pain, but just a small dull pain but if I eat on that side of my mouth where the new filling is it is really painful and also the bottom teeth seem to hurt when I do eat on that side. Is this normal? Should I be able to eat on the tooth with the new filling or does it need time to settle? Thanks
