Growing lettuce indoors

I have a section of worksurface that rarely gets used. It has a lot of houseplants on it. I am debating growing lettuce, cress chilli's etc there instead.

Anyone had success in winter? Trying to find a set up that looks decorative as well as productive.

Fairly competent at veggie patches.
