How can my local independent corner shop sell branded biscuits cheaper than Sainsbury's?

I went to buy some biscuits in Sainsbury's today thinking they'd be cheaper (as they can buy in bulk) than the corner shop. Wrong! For the identical packet of Rich Teas, Sainsbury's was 30p more expensive. What's going on here?

Maybe the local shop is slow to update pricing? Maybe they’ve been sitting on the shelf for months?!

Could be that they are manufactured in another country or for another market. Does it say anything on packet?

The packets just look like the standard Rich Tea packet..

Is your sainsburys a sainsburys local?

I work in a local filling station/shop. A lot of our lines haven't went up in price as been sitting on shelves longer, plus we buy from 5 different suppliers so will buy from wherever on offer so keeps price down for customers

They're usually older stock. Check the dates if you're curious.

Smaller shops sell items slower and tend to have storerooms, so highly likely they're "old" stock. When new stock comes in, the prices will rise as the owner will be paying the new price.

I've noticed this a lot with our local Spar shop - I kept thinking it was strange that the things I buy regularly weren't going up in price, but in the last couple of weeks, loads of things have shot up.

He has a huge stock room, probably not much smaller than the size of his shop itself, and when the door's open, it's jam packed full of stuff. It was certainly handy with the covid panic buying as they didn't run out of anything!

Mine does, out of date, usually. This is mentioned on the sticker.
