Horrible smell.

I have my tumble dryer in a large cupboard and it always been fine. Yesterday I noticed an awful smell in there, like rotten food/smelly feet. Any ideas what it could be?

Electrical problems can give off a smell like that. Is the dryer plugged in to a socket or wired in? Either unplug or switch off if it’s wired in and see if the small goes.

I don't keep the dryer plugged in, I switch it off and unplug it after every use.

Dead mouse behind it (first hand experience…)

I sniffed closer and its also a bit cheesy now. I have a cat but she doesn't bring things in.

Have you cleaned the filters out recently?

Ours is a condenser dryer, it has the fluff filter in the door and then a big metal filter that looks like a big block of corrugated cardboard that pulls out at the bottom. That one needs to be pulled out completely every now and then and either hosed down outside or rinsed with the shower head over the bath.

Justmeandthedog1 · 25/02/2023 19:24

Filters. One has been left with damp fluff in it. Clean them both and wipe with white vinegar , that’ll kill any mould spires and smell.

Thanks.

Also, when you pull the filter out that between the door and the drum, use a cloth down in the gap to clean out any fluff that’s escaped. White vinegar again on a cloth will kill any bacteria off.

If it's in a cupboard I'd assume damp

Whiskers4 · 25/02/2023 19:58

Electrical is slightly fishy, so I'd at least rule that one out.

It's a large hallway storage cupboard, about as big as a downstairs loo and it's internal. There's no sign of damp.

Could be a dead mouse in the walls. We get this in our house every so often and it stinks. Absolutely no way of getting into the walls either. Just have to ride it out until it completely decomposes.

I've left the door open, then tomorrow I'll open all the windows. For now I've put bleach on the floor on a cloth and sprayed air fresher. My daughter is coming to have a look tomorrow, she's braver than me.

UPDATE. I had bought some belly pork which had been left in a carrier bag, inside another carrier bag. It had been there for almost a month when my daughter found it.

I had that with some chops once. They fell out the carrier bag and under my passenger seat. Oof the smell when found several weeks later.

NuffSaidSam · 18/03/2023 20:15

Why was the belly pork in the tumble dryer cupboard? 😂

RicherThanYews · 18/03/2023 20:18

Eww 😂😂😂 reminds me of the time I found a flat cucumber skin in the fridge underneath a tupperware.

smellyflowers · 18/03/2023 20:19

Urgh rotting flesh
