Help! HMRC saying I owe them tax money

They say I haven't payed enough tax from Tax Years 2021-2022 but...

In January 2021 I went on maternity leave and received Maternity allowance.... then never returned to work as I was then on Maternity leave again in October 2021.

I resigned with immediate effect (never returned back from Leave), in July 2022

Hadn't stepped foot back into the office since January 2021 and didn't qualify for my NHS employers Mat leave so just had MA.

With other maternity leave I didn't even apply for maternity allowance as I was claiming carers allowance and didn't want to switch etc and it was all going fine

Can anyone help? Would I still be owing them something? I know I'll have to call

Get all your employment dates, mat leave pay scale and pay slips for the period under investigation then ring up the HMRC and discuss.
It's lively that if you owe a small amount of tax and you've not actively been avoiding paying that you can set up a monthly payment if you do owe.
Don't stew over it call them, maybe Citizens Advice could assist.

Are you sure it is HMRC and not a scam? What have you received from HMRC?

This was my first thought too. Phone HMRC - get their number from their website

Both maternity allowance and carers allowance are taxable but you need have earned at least £12500 inclusive of these and all employment to reach the threshold. You can easily check your exact tax situation by logging into your personal tax information online on the hmrc website (www.gov.uk -be very careful of clone sites)
There are fraudsters out there claiming you have underpaid, but in reality if you have underpaid they simply claw back via your tax code normally. I had one of these fraudster on Thursday call me - I earn below the tax threshold and do the payroll so I'm very aware I do not owe tax!

Maternity allowance is not taxable

Do it wasn't maternity pay, it was maternity allowance. I would log on and look at my online account, then ring them on Monday.

Look up HMRC phone number on their website, then ring them. I have always found them very helpful on the phone.

I see someone else above has also had this genius idea! Smile

@dandydaysahead When you left, did they give you a P45? If so, what date is on it?

maddiemookins16mum · 25/02/2023 17:48

Set up a Personal Tax Account (HMRC Govt Gateway). You need a valid UK passport and your 2022 P60 (if you don’t have this, you can answer some extra ‘ID’ questions. It will show all your pay and tax income etc.

As PP has suggested, could well be scam. I work for an accountant and we see many scam letters coming through re tax and VAT - the detail in the letter are usually very accurate. Call HMRC up on Monday to talk it through and establish what is going on.

It may be a scam and it may be wrong. They got my dh tax completely wrong and mixed him up with someone else.

PamelaDawes · 25/02/2023 17:59

Definitely phone them. I had a bit of a mess with maternity pay which I ignored to my peril. They do answer the phone and 1 out of 4 people who answer are helpful and kind.
